What to Expect

Sauvignon Blanc has a long history in France, and is even one of the parents of the most famous grape of all, Cabernet Sauvignon. Though having achieved high levels of acceptance and popularity in France, Sauvignon Blanc was more commonly associated with specific regions or villages, Pouilly Fume for example. With its arrival in new Zealand, and the country's ability to draw out a level of intensity from the grape, it was poised for bigger and better things. New Zealand's Sauvignon Blanc is often suggested as an alternative to Chardonnay. Its incredibly bright flavor, snappy acidity and fresh, easy feel are a perfect contrast to the rich, buttery full-bodied style of Chardonnay that is most popular. The citrus, pineapple and kiwi fruit tones most common in New Zealand's Sauvignon Blanc are paired with intensely green aromatics that recall gooseberries, freshly cut grass, and jalapenos, offering an unusual and unusually compelling blend of savory and sweet that has found a huge following.

Winemakers Notes

These grapes were selected from a number of vineyards throughout the Marlborough region. Individual blocks were targeted for their strengths and overall contribution to the blend.

The grapes were machine harvested in the cool of the evening and overnight to preserve flavours. Each block was kept separate throughout the various stages of the winemaking process. Fermentations were carried out at cool temperatures and when all tanks had completed ferment they were proportionately blended, fined, stabilised and bottled.

Reviews

On the nose, I found a strong green bell pepper and asaparagus aroma, followed by white flowers and citrus. There were strong bell pepper and asparagus flavors when tasting the wine, as well, but the flowers did not appear in the mouth. Instead, there was a nice blend of grass, lime, and peach. Overall, the acidity made for a nice, crisp wine that lingered in the mouth.

Citrus (lime, grapefruit) with a touch of kiwi fruit to the nose; very fresh tasting. A nice wine to sip on a sunny spring day.

#40 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2008 Pale straw with touches of green. Delightful hints of tropical fruits are accented by aromas of citrus and the traditional New Zealand herbaceous notes. Ripe stone fruit, citrus and tropical flavors mingle with the soothing herbaceous notes. Nice acidity with a touch ofsweet passion fruit add to the full, crisp finish. Fragrant and complex, with a refreshing burst of lime, guava, grapefruit and grass flavors. Wet stone, passion fruit and oyster shell accents add interest, with bright acidity highlighting the vivid finish. Another outstanding Sauvignon read more...

Loved this wine. I am not a huge white wine drinker either. I love the crisp, citrusy flavor and fine finish. Very elegant Sauv blanc which typically leave me with the....eh...factor. Eh.it was ok. Nothing to write home about. But this one...was fabulous.

Great example of a NZ SB. I get lots of grass, herb, and lychee with a little citrus in there too. Great acidity, nice and crisp. Very good wine at this price point!
