What to Expect
Sauvignon Blanc has a long history in France, and is even one of the parents of the most famous grape of all, Cabernet Sauvignon. Though having achieved high levels of acceptance and popularity in France, Sauvignon Blanc was more commonly associated with specific regions or villages, Pouilly Fume for example. With its arrival in new Zealand, and the country's ability to draw out a level of intensity from the grape, it was poised for bigger and better things. New Zealand's Sauvignon Blanc is often suggested as an alternative to Chardonnay. Its incredibly bright flavor, snappy acidity and fresh, easy feel are a perfect contrast to the rich, buttery full-bodied style of Chardonnay that is most popular. The citrus, pineapple and kiwi fruit tones most common in New Zealand's Sauvignon Blanc are paired with intensely green aromatics that recall gooseberries, freshly cut grass, and jalapenos, offering an unusual and unusually compelling blend of savory and sweet that has found a huge following.
Winemakers Notes
"Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2006! Color: Pale straw with touches of green. Aroma: Classic Sauvignon characters of cut grass and tropical fruits are dominant on the nose. Palate: Unfolds with flavors of passionfruit, gooseberry and subtle herbaceousness. The wine is mouthfilling with good texture and finishes well with cleansing acidity and great length. Food Match: Ideally suited to asparagus, oysters and summer salads. Cellar: A wine to drink now and, with careful cellaring, will last up to five years. "

If you like your Sauvignon Blanc with a bit of grapefruit, it doesn't get much better than the Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc 2006 from Marlborough, New Zealand.
This wine is fresh, clean and crisp, and filled with flavors of grapefruit and lime. It's medium-bodied, low in acidity and has a moderate alcohol level of 13 percent -- a good thing, because it's a very easy wine to drink.
It usually hits the shelf at just under $20 a bottle, but every now and then it goes on sale for about $15 -- when it does, stock up!
