What to Expect

Sauvignon Blanc has a long history in France, and is even one of the parents of the most famous grape of all, Cabernet Sauvignon. Though having achieved high levels of acceptance and popularity in France, Sauvignon Blanc was more commonly associated with specific regions or villages, Pouilly Fume for example. With its arrival in new Zealand, and the country's ability to draw out a level of intensity from the grape, it was poised for bigger and better things. New Zealand's Sauvignon Blanc is often suggested as an alternative to Chardonnay. Its incredibly bright flavor, snappy acidity and fresh, easy feel are a perfect contrast to the rich, buttery full-bodied style of Chardonnay that is most popular. The citrus, pineapple and kiwi fruit tones most common in New Zealand's Sauvignon Blanc are paired with intensely green aromatics that recall gooseberries, freshly cut grass, and jalapenos, offering an unusual and unusually compelling blend of savory and sweet that has found a huge following.

Winemakers Notes

2005 MARLBOROUGH SAUVIGNON BLANC

Selected from various low yielding vineyards in the Wairau, Brancott, Waihoepai and Awatere valleys, these Sauvignon Blanc grapes were machine harvested and protectively handled. After juice clarification the wine was innoculated with pure, aromatic yeast strains and cool fermented. Once dry the wine was stabilised, filtered and bottled.

A consistent SavBlanc every vintage. Wonderful balance between citrus, crispness, and slate finish. One of my favorites - pairs well with summer foods especially form the grill.

Pale straw with touches of green. Dominated by classic red capsicum, passion fruit and Cape gooseberry nose, supported with a hint of lime and a subtle herbaceousness. Intense ripe Sauvignon Blanc dominates. A full-flavored style with great balance and longevity.

Typical grassy, nettly aromas of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, though well controlled. Gooseberry notes spiked through with lime flavours, smooth acidity. Fresh, and not as herbal as some competitors. 87.

If I were to choose...I prefer the Babich SB. I do however like the Kim Crawford Pinot Noir. It is a very nice example of NZ pinot noir, at a very good price.

Great QPR on this. Pale, almost translucent in color, with grass, melon, and grapefuit on the palate. More of a palate impression than an aroma impression. More complex and interesting than most at this price point. Had with chicken cobb salad and avocado dressing.
