Kilikanoon Shiraz the Lackey 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Deep garnet in color with crimson hues. The intensely perfumed nose leads with spicy plums and blueberry confit, backed by pepper spices and charry oak. Textured and generous, the palate follows suit with fresh plums and cherries, a generous mid-palate of ripe berry fruits and a finish of ripe, dark chocolatey tannins and balanced acidity.

Founded in 1997 by Kevin Mitchell, Kilikanoon is a boutique Clare Valley winery with an international reputation for producing regionally expressive, terroir-driven wines. The Kilikanoon property, featuring a circa 1860s stone cottage housing Kilikanoon tasting room, was originally settled by early English migrants who named it after an historic old mansion in Cornwall. On purchase of the historic property in 1997, mature vineyards of shiraz, cabernet, grenache and riesling that had been planted by Kevin’s father, Mort in the 1960’s, became a part of Kilikanoon, and now form the heart of the estate vineyards. 10 years on, with the addition of partners Nathan Waks, a principal cellist with the Sydney Symphony, and Bruce Baudinet, Managing Director of Oracle Estates, Kilikanoon is rated by US and Australian critics as one of the Clare Valley’s outstanding wineries, producing bracingly intense and long-lived rieslings, along with powerful, yet balanced shiraz, grenache and cabernet sauvignon. Classic aromas of black pepper, grilled meat and blueberry are joined on the nose by hints of light toast, menthol and wood spice. There is very good focus in the mouth to the meaty, layered fruit with blueberry and blackberry notes backed up with white pepper and spice tones. Really lovely purity and balance here, though one could ask for a little more length, it is still fine drinking. 88pts

This winersquo;s oak is integrated into the texture and flavor, making it chocolatey rich, with blue-black, minty fruit. For grilled lamb.

Inky ruby. Smoky lift to the aromas and flavors of blackberry, cassis and licorice. supple and ripe (this clocks in at 15% alcohol), offering sweet dark berry preserve flavors and a kick of cracked pepper. Not the last word in finesse or complexity, but packs a wallop of dark fruit flavor and finishes round and sweet.

This complex red offers layers of spice and mineral that weave through the ripe blackberry and licorice flavors, playing against a light burr of tannins as it all lasts on the generous finish. Drink now through 2014.

The Shiraz lineup begins with the bargain-priced 2006 Shiraz ldquo; The Lackeyrdquo; which was aged for 15 months in seasoned American oak and bottled without fining or filtration. It offers a stylish bouquet for its humble price featuring aromas of cedar, bacon, plum, and blueberry. This leads to a medium-bodied wine with good grip, intensity, and length. It is a Best Buy.
