Kilikanoon Oracle Shiraz 2012

External Review:

This is polished, focused and beautifully expressive, with seductive blackberry, cream, sweet leather and spice flavors waxing and persisting through the long, generous finish. Drink now through 2016.

Founded in 1997 by Kevin Mitchell, Kilikanoon is a boutique Clare Valley winery with an international reputation for producing regionally expressive, terroir-driven wines. The Kilikanoon property, featuring a circa 1860s stone cottage housing Kilikanoon tasting room, was originally settled by early English migrants who named it after an historic old mansion in Cornwall. On purchase of the historic property in 1997, mature vineyards of shiraz, cabernet, grenache and riesling that had been planted by Kevin’s father, Mort in the 1960’s, became a part of Kilikanoon, and now form the heart of the estate vineyards. 10 years on, with the addition of partners Nathan Waks, a principal cellist with the Sydney Symphony, and Bruce Baudinet, Managing Director of Oracle Estates, Kilikanoon is rated by US and Australian critics as one of the Clare Valley’s outstanding wineries, producing bracingly intense and long-lived rieslings, along with powerful, yet balanced shiraz, grenache and cabernet sauvignon. Dark and velvety. A vivid mouthful of violet-scented blueberry and plum on a creamy texture that lets the finish roll on and on. The tannins are well-integrated. Best from 2009 through 2016.

The dense purple-colored 2004 Shiraz Oracle ratchets up the fruit and glycerin levels, yet remains pure, elegant, and well-balanced. It offers beautiful aromas of blueberries, blackberries, acacia flowers, and spicy oak. Full-bodied, powerful, cleanly textured, long, and heady, I would not be surprised to see it evolve for 15ndash;20 years.

The Oracle Shiraz is the flagship wine of the Kilikanoon domaine. Coffee bean, sweet plum, and spice integrate with toasty vanilla oak. This wine can be cellared for 10-15 years.

The 2005 Shiraz andldquo;Oracleandrdquo; was aged in 100% French oak, 50% new. Purple-colored, it exhibits aromas of cedar, damp earth, mint, blueberry, and blackberry. Made in a focused, racy, elegant style, it has luscious flavors, excellent balance, and a long, pure finish. It has several years of aging potential but can be enjoyed now and over the next 15 years.

Among Kilikanoons finest Shiraz's the 2005 Oracle can proudly stand along its predecessors, its another great effort from winemaker Kevin Mitchell and a superb example of what the Clare Valley can produce. Exotic aromas and flavours of sweet plums and berry fruits harmonise perfectly with nuances of chocolate and spice. Its richly textured and smooth with subtle oak characters that complete the experience. Drink over the next decade.

Saturated violet. Explosive, wild aromas of blackberry liqueur, cassis, licorice root and espresso. Boasts impressive weight and power on the palate, the dark berry flavors wonderfully sweet but also focused and firmed by solid tannins. Awfully primary right now but possesses superb concentration of fruit and fine-grained, well-managed tannins. Finishes long, on a note of sweet licorice.
