Kilikanoon Mort's Block Riesling 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Lime pith, soil, a touch of Crayola and low chalky, quince fruit with a melon, floral top note. Broad and a touch fleshy on entry, this then snaps the acidity whip and it cuts through the fruit like a laser, driving right through to the lemony finish. Shows flashes of peach, tea and chalk. This has a nice amount of flesh with bright flavors supported by the blazing acidity, which keeps the finish going and going. 90pts

Founded in 1997 by Kevin Mitchell, Kilikanoon is a boutique Clare Valley winery with an international reputation for producing regionally expressive, terroir-driven wines. The Kilikanoon property, featuring a circa 1860s stone cottage housing Kilikanoon tasting room, was originally settled by early English migrants who named it after an historic old mansion in Cornwall. On purchase of the historic property in 1997, mature vineyards of shiraz, cabernet, grenache and riesling that had been planted by Kevin’s father, Mort in the 1960’s, became a part of Kilikanoon, and now form the heart of the estate vineyards. 10 years on, with the addition of partners Nathan Waks, a principal cellist with the Sydney Symphony, and Bruce Baudinet, Managing Director of Oracle Estates, Kilikanoon is rated by US and Australian critics as one of the Clare Valley’s outstanding wineries, producing bracingly intense and long-lived rieslings, along with powerful, yet balanced shiraz, grenache and cabernet sauvignon. Greg was right: These are begging for some oysters! Bone dry, this Aussie Riesling is fragrant with floral, lime and touch of peach. Love the minerality and vow to find some briny shellfish to enjoy with it next time.

I love a great dry riesling, and this one is perfect! I tend to love REALLY dry wine, so I loved this one, but might be too dry for some tastes. A bit of floral and fruit, with a nice dry mineral finish.

Pears and citrus on the nose. Lemons and Pear in the mouth. The first sip really made my jaw tingle! A very bright citrus finish.

Wine Tasting NotesThis single vineyard wine, produced from low yielding fruit from 40 year old Riesling vines, is one of the cornerstones of Kilikanoon's portfolio. The Mort's Block Riesling showcases ripe citrus, limes and floral notes on the nose. A long and full flavored palate is balanced by crisp, natural acidity.
