Kilikanoon Killerman's Run Shiraz Grenache 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Lifted aromas of ripe plums, black raspberries and subtle charry oak characters meld together to create a balanced, fruit forward wine. The ripe Shiraz and Grenache fruit compliment one another perfectly providing a sweet and spicy mid palate along with a long, elegant finish.

Founded in 1997 by Kevin Mitchell, Kilikanoon is a boutique Clare Valley winery with an international reputation for producing regionally expressive, terroir-driven wines. The Kilikanoon property, featuring a circa 1860s stone cottage housing Kilikanoon tasting room, was originally settled by early English migrants who named it after an historic old mansion in Cornwall. On purchase of the historic property in 1997, mature vineyards of shiraz, cabernet, grenache and riesling that had been planted by Kevin’s father, Mort in the 1960’s, became a part of Kilikanoon, and now form the heart of the estate vineyards. 10 years on, with the addition of partners Nathan Waks, a principal cellist with the Sydney Symphony, and Bruce Baudinet, Managing Director of Oracle Estates, Kilikanoon is rated by US and Australian critics as one of the Clare Valley’s outstanding wineries, producing bracingly intense and long-lived rieslings, along with powerful, yet balanced shiraz, grenache and cabernet sauvignon. Black peppery, big black berry jam fruit with very nice tone of black tea and English breakfast tea and a bit of toast. Smells like breakfast! Lightly smoky and honied with an emerging touch of almond brittle. Bigger styled in the mouth though smooth and soft, a fruit bomb. Actually has goods structure just not immediately apparent, though the dark berry and plum fruit is a touch indistinct on the mid-palate and this looses focus turning once again a touch flabby and loose. Finishes with a touch of cocoa, vanilla and tea then a bit spicy with a cinnamon red-hot note. Solid if uninspired. 87pts

Very meaty nose of sheep and wet wool. Thick, oily wine. Lower in acidity it comes across as very mouth filling. I'd pair it with something big - steak in pepper sauce for example. The finish is very fruity - plums, prunes and figs. Some licorice notes after which die slowly.

Wine Advocate ReviewRated 90The 2006 Shiraz-Grenache "Killerman's Run" is composed of 60% Shiraz and 40% Grenache and was aged for 16 months in older French and American oak hogsheads before bottling without fining or filtration. Dark ruby-colored, it has an alluring perfume of cinnamon, cassis, kirsch, and blueberry. Velvety-textured, elegant, and intensely flavored, it has a long, pure finish. It will provide pleasure over the next 8-10 years.Wine Tasting NotesAromas of ripe plums, prunes and berries meld together in this blend of Shiraz (60%) and Grenache (40%). Sourced from the best possible fruit from a range of premium areas in South Australia. Made traditionally in small batches and matured for up to two years in older French and American oak casks.

Lifted aromas of ripe plums, black raspberries and subtle charry oak characters meld together to create a balanced, fruit forward wine. The ripe Shiraz and Grenache fruit compliment one another perfectly providing a sweet and spicy mid palate along with a long, elegant finish.
