Founded in 1997 by Kevin Mitchell, Kilikanoon is a boutique Clare Valley winery with an international reputation for producing regionally expressive, terroir-driven wines. The Kilikanoon property, featuring a circa 1860s stone cottage housing Kilikanoon tasting room, was originally settled by early English migrants who named it after an historic old mansion in Cornwall. On purchase of the historic property in 1997, mature vineyards of shiraz, cabernet, grenache and riesling that had been planted by Kevin’s father, Mort in the 1960’s, became a part of Kilikanoon, and now form the heart of the estate vineyards. 10 years on, with the addition of partners Nathan Waks, a principal cellist with the Sydney Symphony, and Bruce Baudinet, Managing Director of Oracle Estates, Kilikanoon is rated by US and Australian critics as one of the Clare Valley’s outstanding wineries, producing bracingly intense and long-lived rieslings, along with powerful, yet balanced shiraz, grenache and cabernet sauvignon. Floral and blueberry aromas jump from the glass of the inky/blue/purple-tinged 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Blocks Road. From 41- and 60-year old vineyards, it is another superb example of just how good South Australian Cabernet Sauvignon can be. Aged in 300 liter French hogsheads (40% new), and bottled unfined and unfiltered, it reveals a style not unlike a terrific mountain Cabernet from Napa. Blueberry, acacia flower, black raspberry, and creme de cassis characteristics along with a subtle hint of spicy oak emerge from this full-bodied, rich, pure, elegant, long effort. It is a steal at $30.

Rich, powerful and smooth, beginning with scents of black currants and dried berries. Spice and licorice flavors are interwoven with a good amount of tannin, resulting in a wine that is ready to serve now, but could last quite a few years longer.

Inky purple/black core. Dusty chocolate and violet aromas are underscored by green pepper. On the palate the green pepper is paired with asparagus over chewy tannins. Jammy on the finish. Mike Supple.

Ruby red. Lush dark berry aromas accented by sexy violet and sweet oak spices. Explosive, juicy flavors of cherry, redcurrant and black raspberry, with no rough edges or herbal tones. But this more than simply a fruit bomb as the flavors are focused, lively and sweet, with some subtle, peppery spice notes emerging on the long, bright finish. This was raised in all French oak.
