Kerpen Riesling Kabinett Wehlener Sonnenuhr 2007

Member Review by cahughey:

Pale yellow in color. Nose has a hint of yeastiness that reminds me of warm wheat rolls. Nose is also sweet and fruity. I expected this wine to be more dry. It's quite sweet--it's almost like a SweetTart candy. It leaves a slight tang on the back of your tongue after swallowing. Long finish. I like it better as an apéritif than will food. I tried it with a sweet/sour Asian dish and it wasn't a good match.

...a tart, crisp, floral wine that I may have caught in a closed stage. The finish is dry, fruity, and pleasant. Drink it over the next 2-3 years.

In order to utilize only the healthiest grapes, Martin Kerpin meticulously sorts his hand-picked Riesling before aging it in old oak barrels. The resulting wine is a complex, yet pleasant offering. It shows strong mineral content (due to the large content of Devonian Slate in the vineyard) upon entry, that gives way very ripe stone-fruit and lively acidity (In a 10 year old Kabinett!). This is the best value in Riesling in the entire store!

Martin Kerpenandrsquo;s 2007 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett exhibits the site typicity and impeccable balance one has come to expect based on many predecessors. With aromas of apple, vanilla, honey, lily, as well as the subtle creaminess often exhibited by Riesling from this site even in its lighter manifestations, it is easy for a youthful Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett to be dominated by its sweetness, but here there is a crisp, clear, fresh apple and zesty citrus character that keeps things lively, a delicacy of touch and a tingling, saline, wet-slate mineral cast that together insure instant success not just on its own but at table. This little classic can be enjoyed anytime over the next 8andndash;10 years.

Round and peachy, this is fruit-forward yet tethered by its firm acidity. With its floral aromas underlined by dusty notes of slate, this feels traditional and expressive, and very true to its origins.
