Kenwood Sonoma County Merlot 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Pungent with aromas of old wood, fresh berry fruit, cotton gauze, sage and soft spiciness all coming together on the attractive nose. A bit soft in the mouth, this has lovely zingy red cherry, currant and red plummy fruit on the palate. There are subtle spice notes and a hint of dry leather, but this is mostly about the fruit. the acidity makes itself known on the backend, as do the tannins which are a touch rustic and chewy and add some character to the palate. Medium bodied and just a little rustic, this is fun to drink and has a pretty long finish filled with subtly savory tart red berry and plum fruit. 86pts

Located in the heart of the Sonoma Valley, Kenwood Vineyards is dedicated to producing premium wines truly representative of Sonoma County’s world-class vineyards. Kenwood Vineyards was established in 1970 in the former Pagani Brothers Winery, a historic cellar dating back to 1906. Thoroughly refurbished and modernized, the facility now boasts more than 125 stainless steel fermenting tanks and large oak uprights, and 20,000 small French and American oak barrels, all devoted to Kenwood Vineyards’ “small lot” style of winemaking. In addition to the 22-acre vineyard surrounding the winery, Kenwood Vineyards sources grapes from dozens of vineyards – many farmed sustainably, using natural soil amendments and pest controls whenever possible rather than chemicals - in Sonoma County’s best appellations, including Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma Valley and Sonoma Mountain. Each lot from each vineyard is kept separate throughout the winemaking process, enabling the winemaker to bring it to its fullest potential. This “small lot” or “cuvee” style of winemaking also enables the winemaker to draw on an exceptionally broad “palette” to assemble wines that showcase classic character, subtle complexity and superb balance. As a result, every Kenwood Vineyards wine – whether Table Wine Series, Sonoma Series, Reserve, Jack London Vineyard or Artist Series – is consistent in quality and consistently delicious. Read less

Jammy and plummy with a nice black currant and Zinberry character on the nose, framed with light charred cedar oak aromas. Light-bodied and fresh in the mouth with a nice cherry tone. This is dry and firm, a smaller wine that sweetens slightly on the back end but remains well balanced and rather subdued right through the modest finish. A smaller scaled table wine that has not succumbed to the “more sweet fruit is better” meme. 85pts

Quite fresh on the nose with red fruit supported by gentle herb, vanilla and bitter root notes. Soft and smooth on entry, this shows a nice, low and firm base of polished tannins with gentle if fresh wild raspberry and pomegranate fruit layered on top. The tannins are really quite fine here. While this is a touch simple, it is freshly fruited and shows a certain vibrancy on the palate. The tannins pop a bit on the finish, adding more savory depth and a more assertive veneer of oak that is not off-putting. Really honest feeling with a rustic edge that I find appealing. 86pts

Tight and slightly leafy on the nose with hints of black tea and tobacco layered over sweet edged black cherry and currant fruit. This shows attractive complexity already. Broad, supple and very well balanced in the mouth with an attractive transparent texture and rather [ure and bright black currant and mulberry flavors supported by well judged oak and some lovely tea and dried herb acetns. There’s some pencil lead that emerges on the backend where the wine shows more red cherry, sour cherry fruit before fading gently on the cedar and vanilla laced finish. Easy to drink but not facile, this will drink well early. 92pts

Restrained and slightly herbaceous with integrated oak notes well balanced by the slightly vegetal, cauliflower and floral scented notes that contrast against the ripe red currant, red raspberry fruit. The oak is a touch too prominent on the nose at this point. Rather seamless on entry, deceptively so. On the mid-palate this begins to reveal lively acidity that is intertwined with the ripe, juicy, wild black raspberry fruits. The oak is well integrated and offers lots of accent on the palate with herbal top notes and a touch of eucalyptus appearing on the backend. This finishes a touch short but with nice purity to the flavors. 92pts

Medium weight purple color in the glass. Some volatiles on the nose. Nice on the tongue. Medium weght, not a whole lot of fruit. A bit of a minty overtone. No tannin at all. Very pleasant, brief finish. Love the price--US$6.03 at Winco.

Dry, well balanced and slightly unremarkable in many ways, but perfectly delicious and great for just about any occasion. This is more Old World than New World, and quite the bargain to boot. It’s a light and fresh wine so don’t overpower it with big, smoky and sweet flavors, instead go for something with simple, clean flavors. Gently grilled pork chops marinated in mustard, white wine and sage are always delicious and would be the perfect yin to this wine’s yang.

Vile wine. I Added soda water to this and it became drinkable. It like being corked, but its not TCA, it was something else. Cork was in good condition. Is this wine for real, or did someone microwave this stuff and I'm missing something?

Standard merlot. Picked up on sale, very drinkable, far from "vile". Seems to be aging well.

Complex aromas of cherries, loganberries and licorice. Full-bodied with excellent structure, smooth tannins and a long finish.

Vintage: 2007 11/12/2010

Rating: 85/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the November 2010 issue. Fairly dense yet a touch withdrawn in the nose with hints of dark earth, tobacco and tea-leaf tied to a subtle note of black cherry fruit, this bottling follows as expected in the mouth and is a little tougher and less inviting than classic Merlot is wont to be. It is not wildly excessive in tannin, yet its shortfall of core fruit leaves it gritty and gruff all the same.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Cellar for future drinking. Wine will improve with bottle aging.
