Kenwood Sonoma County Merlot 2010
Kenwood Vineyards creates its award-winning Sonoma County Merlot from vineyards located in Sonoma County’s best grape-growing appellations. Our Estate Vineyard located in the heart of the Sonoma Valley provides good color and excellent texture. The blend is balanced with grapes from the warmer Dry Creek and Alexander Valley regions which have a more fruit-forward character. The resulting wine is ripe, supple and well-proportioned. After a long growing season the Merlot crop was harvested in September and October of 2010 as the individual vineyards reached the peak of ripeness and flavor. Each vineyard lot was fermented and aged separately in a combination of French and American oak barrels for 20 months. After aging, the wines were removed from barrels and blended for taste and balance, just prior to bottling in July of 2012.
Editorial Reviews for Kenwood Sonoma County Merlot
Pungent with aromas of old wood, fresh berry fruit, cotton gauze, sage and soft spiciness all coming together on the attractive nose. A bit soft in the mouth, this has lovely zingy red cherry, currant and red plummy fruit on the palate. There are subtle spice notes and a hint of dry leather, but this is mostly about the fruit. the acidity makes itself known on the backend, as do the tannins which are a touch rustic and chewy and add some character to the palate. Medium bodied and just a little rustic, this is fun to drink and has a pretty long finish filled with subtly savory tart red berry and plum fruit. 86pts
Very lightly scented with a nice cocoa top note and some tarragon, mint and soapy floral notes all above the light berry fruit notes. This is lovely. A bit small-scaled and a bit simple, but it shows fine balance, soft tannins that add a hint of mouth grab, and fresh flavors of berries, cream and vanilla, topped with a touch of dried strawberry. It’s another simple wine but one that is easy to drink and true to type. It turns a little dry on the finish, but pair this with a nice rack of beef ribs and that will be the last thing you notice. 85pts
Quite fresh on the nose with red fruit supported by gentle herb, vanilla and bitter root notes. Soft and smooth on entry, this shows a nice, low and firm base of polished tannins with gentle if fresh wild raspberry and pomegranate fruit layered on top. The tannins are really quite fine here. While this is a touch simple, it is freshly fruited and shows a certain vibrancy on the palate. The tannins pop a bit on the finish, adding more savory depth and a more assertive veneer of oak that is not off-putting. Really honest feeling with a rustic edge that I find appealing. 86pts
Restrained and slightly herbaceous with integrated oak notes well balanced by the slightly vegetal, cauliflower and floral scented notes that contrast against the ripe red currant, red raspberry fruit. The oak is a touch too prominent on the nose at this point. Rather seamless on entry, deceptively so. On the mid-palate this begins to reveal lively acidity that is intertwined with the ripe, juicy, wild black raspberry fruits. The oak is well integrated and offers lots of accent on the palate with herbal top notes and a touch of eucalyptus appearing on the backend. This finishes a touch short but with nice purity to the flavors. 92pts
Interestingly, a bit of burnt marshmallow aftertaste
Surprisingly good, a dark fruity dry affordable red.
2009 Vintage - Garnet opaque hue, aromas of dried berries, game and spice; flavor notes of plums and boysenberries with good acidity and balance to a moderate finish.
Vile wine. I Added soda water to this and it became drinkable. It like being corked, but its not TCA, it was something else. Cork was in good condition. Is this wine for real, or did someone microwave this stuff and I'm missing something?
Standard merlot. Picked up on sale, very drinkable, far from "vile". Seems to be aging well.

Rating: 85/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the November 2010 issue. Fairly dense yet a touch withdrawn in the nose with hints of dark earth, tobacco and tea-leaf tied to a subtle note of black cherry fruit, this bottling follows as expected in the mouth and is a little tougher and less inviting than classic Merlot is wont to be. It is not wildly excessive in tannin, yet its shortfall of core fruit leaves it gritty and gruff all the same.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Cellar for future drinking. Wine will improve with bottle aging.
Winery notes- Our Sonoma County Zinfandel has rich zinfandel-characters of aromas like blackberries spices and notes of vanilla from aging in French and American oak. Broad velvety tannins give it excellent body and a long finish.
Exhibits the complex and intense flavors for which the wine has become famous. The bouquet begins with fruity aromas of dried cherries, blueberries and cassis and is followed by spicy aromatic notes of sage and sassafras.
