Kenwood Sonoma County Chardonnay 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Vanilla cream, green apple and lime leaf greets the nose along with a touch of golden raisin. A bit tight on entry with a touch of dissolved CO2 adding a bit of a prickle on the palate. Once you get past that this is fairly dry and nicely complex with an earthy streak of apple fruit layered over hints of butter, vanilla, and gentle mineral tones. Really kind of tense and restrained for a wine at this price point, there's a hint of tannin on the finish, which is long and fairly complex. Solid value. 87pts Acidity: Medium Perceived Sweetness: Low Oak: Low Spicy Flavors: Medium Low Savory Flavors: Medium Low Fruity Flavors: Medium Intensity of Flavor: Medium Weight in Mouth: Medium

Located in the heart of the Sonoma Valley, Kenwood Vineyards is dedicated to producing premium wines truly representative of Sonoma County’s world-class vineyards. Kenwood Vineyards was established in 1970 in the former Pagani Brothers Winery, a historic cellar dating back to 1906. Thoroughly refurbished and modernized, the facility now boasts more than 125 stainless steel fermenting tanks and large oak uprights, and 20,000 small French and American oak barrels, all devoted to Kenwood Vineyards’ “small lot” style of winemaking. In addition to the 22-acre vineyard surrounding the winery, Kenwood Vineyards sources grapes from dozens of vineyards – many farmed sustainably, using natural soil amendments and pest controls whenever possible rather than chemicals - in Sonoma County’s best appellations, including Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma Valley and Sonoma Mountain. Each lot from each vineyard is kept separate throughout the winemaking process, enabling the winemaker to bring it to its fullest potential. This “small lot” or “cuvee” style of winemaking also enables the winemaker to draw on an exceptionally broad “palette” to assemble wines that showcase classic character, subtle complexity and superb balance. As a result, every Kenwood Vineyards wine – whether Table Wine Series, Sonoma Series, Reserve, Jack London Vineyard or Artist Series – is consistent in quality and consistently delicious. Read less

Quintessential California Chardonnay on the nose with apple and pineapple over softly spicy, buttery oak tones. On the palate this has a gentle sweetness adding depth to the slightly simple white orchard fruit and pineapple fruit. It’s soft and round on the mid-palate and fades gently, if a bit quickly, on the bright finish. A good value in an easy to drink style suitable for enjoying on its own or paired with simple fare, like a curried chicken pita sandwich. 86pts

Aromas of green apples and Asian pears followed by notes of tropical fruit and French oak, lush and viscous mouth feel with a lingering, slightly crisp finish.

Rating: 83/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the October 2010 issue. Simple, slightly thin and wholly wanting for confident fruit, this clean, but taut, slightly bitter-edged offering plays off a touch of sweetness against lots of wiry, tooth-tingling acidity, and, in the end, it winds up tasting as much of green pineapples as it does of anything else.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Unlikely to improve with further aging.

Lots of oak, lots of upfront ripe peach, pear and tropical fruit, that's pretty much the story with this widely available Chard. With more than 100,000 cases, it should be easy to find.

Rich in oaky, fruity flavor, this wine satisfies with pineapples and other citrus fruits, buttered cinnamon toast and vanilla. It's pretty direct, but the price is right for a clean, crisp Chard made in the popular style.

Pleasing. Marked by crisp, clean grapefruit, pear and apple notes, it fans out and turns refreshing. Drink now through 2000.

Light, lean, fresh and fruity, zingy apple and melon flavors lingering spicily on the finish. Ready new. 17,700 cases made.

A clean, peachy chardonnay, this offers honey and oak flavors to sweeten a roast chicken.
