Kenwood Pinot Gris 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This is certainly pungent, and fruity though with aromas of tropical fruit leaning towards guava along with cooked apricot and melon it is somewhat atypical. Gentle on the palate, a little swet and with fruity flavors that recall the nose but show nice restraint this is a very appealing wine to a broad spectrum of consumer looking for something a bit complex, easy to drink and yet not without weight in the mouth and fresh fruit character. Rather clean and bright on the finish with an appealing underlying astringency and peach pit character, this is an interesting drink. 86pts

Located in the heart of the Sonoma Valley, Kenwood Vineyards is dedicated to producing premium wines truly representative of Sonoma County’s world-class vineyards. Kenwood Vineyards was established in 1970 in the former Pagani Brothers Winery, a historic cellar dating back to 1906. Thoroughly refurbished and modernized, the facility now boasts more than 125 stainless steel fermenting tanks and large oak uprights, and 20,000 small French and American oak barrels, all devoted to Kenwood Vineyards’ “small lot” style of winemaking. In addition to the 22-acre vineyard surrounding the winery, Kenwood Vineyards sources grapes from dozens of vineyards – many farmed sustainably, using natural soil amendments and pest controls whenever possible rather than chemicals - in Sonoma County’s best appellations, including Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma Valley and Sonoma Mountain. Each lot from each vineyard is kept separate throughout the winemaking process, enabling the winemaker to bring it to its fullest potential. This “small lot” or “cuvee” style of winemaking also enables the winemaker to draw on an exceptionally broad “palette” to assemble wines that showcase classic character, subtle complexity and superb balance. As a result, every Kenwood Vineyards wine – whether Table Wine Series, Sonoma Series, Reserve, Jack London Vineyard or Artist Series – is consistent in quality and consistently delicious. Read less

Sweet apple fruit greets the nose along with a hint of white pepper and a light note of dried fruit and toasted nuts. A bit of an overripe flavor profile on entry, this retains a very ripe, almost syrupy peach quality in the mouth with noticeable richness balanced by good acidity. There’s not much of a finish here but the sugar does become more obvious once the modest acidity recedes. Tastes a bit heavy and dull. 80pts

This is very fruity on the nose, almost explosively fruity, with maraschino cherry notes over peach, pear and candied orange notes. A bit sweet in the mouth with that same explosion of fruit salad that came through on the nose. The fruit is intense here and perhaps too much of a good thing, lending this a fruit juice/sangria-like quality. The acidity supports the fruit fairly well, adding a freshness to the orange tones; but this is top heavy and lacks some balance in the mouth with a sugar-lengthened finish that shows some orange pith notes. This is going to elicit some OMG moments, but the fruitiness may be too much for some. 86pts

Super ripe fruit on the nose. High alcohol on nose too. Syrupy, nectar-like to try and hide dry, bitter finish. Slight effervescence.

TASTING NOTES:Aromatic notes of melon, jasmine, almond, and citrus complement fresh and crisp flavors, with a touch of natural sweetness.Although 2013 is only Kenwood Vineyards fifth vintage of Pinot Gris, it has already received many accolades, winning three best of class awards and one best of show white sweepstakes award. This years offering upholds this tradition by exhibiting the fruity/almond blossom aroma and the fresh taste Pinot Gris is famous for. Pinot Gris excels in the cool climate of Sonoma Countys Russian River Valley. Harvested on a cool morning in early October, the grapes were swiftly brought to the winery to be pressed. After settling, the juice was fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks to showcase the natural acidity and fruit flavor of the wine. The resulting bottle is well-balanced with excellent flavor and a long finish.FOOD PAIRINGSThe subtle fruit character and acidity of Pinot Gris make it an excellent apéritif, or as an accompaniment to a variety of dishes. Try pairing it with fruit or vegetable courses, fresh fish or savory roasted poultry dish. - Winery

Pale straw color. Notes of peach, crushed rock, and a touch of vanilla scent a clean, bright nose. Vibrant acidity supports palate flavors of stone fruit and citrus, keeping this crisp and racy straight through the precise finish. Lively and straigh... Alex Shaw.
