Quite fresh on the nose with red fruit supported by gentle herb, vanilla and bitter root notes. Soft and smooth on entry, this shows a nice, low and firm base of polished tannins with gentle if fresh wild raspberry and pomegranate fruit layered on top. The tannins are really quite fine here. While this is a touch simple, it is freshly fruited and shows a certain vibrancy on the palate. The tannins pop a bit on the finish, adding more savory depth and a more assertive veneer of oak that is not off-putting. Really honest feeling with a rustic edge that I find appealing. 86pts

Very lightly scented with a nice cocoa top note and some tarragon, mint and soapy floral notes all above the light berry fruit notes. This is lovely. A bit small-scaled and a bit simple, but it shows fine balance, soft tannins that add a hint of mouth grab, and fresh flavors of berries, cream and vanilla, topped with a touch of dried strawberry. It’s another simple wine but one that is easy to drink and true to type. It turns a little dry on the finish, but pair this with a nice rack of beef ribs and that will be the last thing you notice. 85pts

Surprisingly good, a dark fruity dry affordable red.

At least two years of ageing and subsequent refinement in bottle result is a wine of a ruby red color with an intense bouquet of cherries and of morello cherries preserved in alcohol, with a robust body and a particularly well-balanced flavor.

Complex aromas of cherries, loganberries and licorice. Full-bodied with excellent structure, smooth tannins and a long finish.

Medium-bodied with black cherry, spice, and vanilla oak flavors that finish with classic peppery Zinfandel notes.

A delicious red wine with flavors of raspberry and plum, combined with toasty vanilla oak and spicy notes of white pepper. Exceptionally well balanced, with approachable tannins and smooth finish. - Winery

Winemaker's Notes:

Kenwood has prided itself on its highly acclaimed, consistent gold medal winning Sonoma Zinfandel since it was first produced in 1970. The zest and zing of this varietal make it one of our winemaker’s favorites. Our Sonoma County Zinfandel is blended from vineyards located in Sonoma County’s best known Zinfandel appellations; Sonoma, Dry Creek and Alexander Valleys. A portion of the blend comes from old vine vineyards that have been producing excellent grapes since the 1940’s. The 2009 vintage had a light crop that ripened gently over a mild summer and fall. It was picked in September and October as the individual vineyards reached their peak of ripeness and flavor. Each lot of grapes was fermented and aged separately in French & American oak barrels for 19 months. After aging, the wines were removed from barrels and blended for taste and balance just prior to bottling in August of 2011. A small amount of Petite Sirah from the Sonoma Valley was blended into the wine just before bottling to add additional complexity and backbone.

Tasting Notes:

This classic, well-balanced Merlot combines elegant structure with loads of fruit. Fruity aromas of raspberry and plum join with aromatic notes of spice, dark chocolate, and French oak. On the palate, it is a well-balanced wine with supple tannins and a lingering finish.
