Kenwood Jack London Vineyard Zinfandel 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Tight on the nose and nicely earthy with fairly heavy wood, the supporting fruit is there if slow to emerge. Has a nice, sweetly oaky nose. Very smooth and polished on entry with moderately rich black berry/black cherry notes splashed with mineral earth and charred wood notes. There’s some toasty marshmallow that pops on the back end, finishing with angular tannins, dried black fruit and solid length. Dried strawberry and vanilla on the finale. This needs a bit of time to sort itself out, but is pretty well balanced and nicely layered. 88pts

Located in the heart of the Sonoma Valley, Kenwood Vineyards is dedicated to producing premium wines truly representative of Sonoma County’s world-class vineyards. Kenwood Vineyards was established in 1970 in the former Pagani Brothers Winery, a historic cellar dating back to 1906. Thoroughly refurbished and modernized, the facility now boasts more than 125 stainless steel fermenting tanks and large oak uprights, and 20,000 small French and American oak barrels, all devoted to Kenwood Vineyards’ “small lot” style of winemaking. In addition to the 22-acre vineyard surrounding the winery, Kenwood Vineyards sources grapes from dozens of vineyards – many farmed sustainably, using natural soil amendments and pest controls whenever possible rather than chemicals - in Sonoma County’s best appellations, including Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma Valley and Sonoma Mountain. Each lot from each vineyard is kept separate throughout the winemaking process, enabling the winemaker to bring it to its fullest potential. This “small lot” or “cuvee” style of winemaking also enables the winemaker to draw on an exceptionally broad “palette” to assemble wines that showcase classic character, subtle complexity and superb balance. As a result, every Kenwood Vineyards wine – whether Table Wine Series, Sonoma Series, Reserve, Jack London Vineyard or Artist Series – is consistent in quality and consistently delicious. Read less

alcohol, brambly fruit, smoke, oak, vanilla, sweet, fresh yet a touch jammy black raspberry fruit, nice touch of woodsy herb and leather top note. It’s complex but a little clumsy on the nose. In the mouth this is fairly smooth and showing just a little youthful aggressiveness. Tannins are mild and integrated, balanced by very fine acidity. There’s a little leather on the attack followed by fruit with notes of vanilla and milk chocolate edging the slightly bitter cherry fruit, which reveals a touch of herb and spice on the finish, which is a bit short and hot. 87pts

There’s a distinct wet dog, horse blanket note on the nose at first, with an interesting array of juniper, eucalyptus, pepper, cocoa and mineral aromas. Rather small on entry but then this gains volume in the mouth quite quickly. The fruit is slow to emerge, but unfolds with a surprisingly black cherry/black raspberry vein of flavors. This is downright restrained in the mouth and almost elegant with gentle suggestions of cocoa, earth and vanilla across the mid-palate and a tight, slightly drying cocoa tinged finish with a slightly minty finale. This is not fruit-driven and may disappoint some palates, but I find it to be surprisingly good. 91pts

A little light at first but turning more lightly spiced blackberry jammy with air. Nice a clean with a really lovely bit of bramble but the alcohol is a touch obvious. A bit of brownie and forest floor completes the nose. Nice and dry on entry with some tannin offering a nice bit of grab. The flavors are fresh if not terribly intense, strawberry and black raspberry jam. Crisp finish, turns a touch astringent and shows some heat. 87pts

Deep aromas of blackberries, chocolate, and bramble fruit. A hint of eucalyptus, but mostly dark black fruit.

Just like the label, this a much darker side of the Zin world...there are deeper black fruit aromas going on and a lot more pizzazz in the mouth. I like this lone wolf.

Kenwood's 09 Jack London Zin had me at hello. Enticing aromas of cherry and blackberry, combine with spicy hints of anise, and black pepper. This classic Zin is fruit forward, jammy and delicious, followed by intense chocolate, and a spicy finish. This wine has a plush mouth feel, and a loitering finish.

Big, hot wine, spicy with puckering acidity, dark plum flavors and a long finish.

Smoky, lots of oak, dry on the nose, but sweet on the tongue, with strong acidity. Aromatics include cherries, blackberries, blueberries, cashews, hazelnuts, some florals as well. The acidity and tannins give it great length, but the former is a bit too much. The aftertaste gets kind of spent quickly, and seems too sweet and fruity. Still enjoyable to drink.

Moderate amount of oak and vanilla in the nose, with a little bit of citrus in the aroma and entering the palate, soft vanilla texture.

The label is iconic; author Jack London lived in Sonoma County and his ranch is now owned by the California Parks Department. But the lava-terraced vineyards on the ranch are farmed by Kenwood Vineyards who produce this exceptional Zinfandel. The wolf head label tells you it’s the Jack London Vineyard bottling from the outside, but inside, it’s the wine that tells you. Wine Enthusiast scored it 91 points and Wine & Spirits gave it 93 points and WIne Enthusiast Magazine scored it 91 saying "Grab this Zin now, it’s that good a value. Dry, medium-bodied and spicy, it has luscious wild blueberry, cherry, briary herb, vanilla, cola and toast flavors, wrapped into silky tannins for drinking now. In short, this 2011 bottling rocks. Production was just under 5,000 cases."

The spice of a redwood forest infuses this smooth, balanced zin. After it’s been open for a day, the wine develops into a blast of flavor, building on blueberry fruit with complex depths of tannins. Open and inviting. Decant it for grilled lamb chops

Vineyard's red volcanic soil combines with the fruity characteristics of the grapes to produce an excellent, very distinctive Zinfandel. The flavors from these vineyards exude aromas of cherry and fig combined with spicy notes of vanilla and pepper. Delic

Zesty and a touch rustic, with fresh cherry and earthy spice aromas, featuring flavors that pack lots of spice, mineral and dusty herb. Best from 2014 through 2018.

Smooth and spicy, this has lots of raspberry, cherry and smoky wood flavors that taste sweet and savory, but turn nicely dry and complex on the finish. It shows real class. Best over the next few years.

At least two years of ageing and subsequent refinement in bottle result is a wine of a ruby red color with an intense bouquet of cherries and of morello cherries preserved in alcohol, with a robust body and a particularly well-balanced flavor.

A solid Zinfandel to toss back with ribs, chicken, pork chops or a grilled steak. Itrsquo;s dry, full-bodied and tannic, with peppery flavors of blackberries and currants.
