Kendall-Jackson Zinfandel Vintner's Reserve California 2012

Sweet cherry fruit laced with vanilla, cola, and softly toasted spicy aromas greet the nose. An interesting wine that is perhaps a touch sweet but offers an attractive blend of very-ripe plum date and black cherry flavors that are backed up with complicating notes of bitter spices and herbs and well integrated wood. The tannins build on the palate and this has a hint of black currant in the mouth, which along with the herbal character lends this a slightly Cabernet like tone on the palate, but this remains distinctly Zin like with power, weight, and complexity in the mouth and a rather long if slightly stick finish. 87pts

  Jess Stonestreet Jackson, founder of Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, was a legend in the wine industry. Thanks to his dedication and skill, he popularized Chardonnay in the United States, with the best-selling Chardonnay in America for over 20 years. In 1983, just one year after he founded Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, his Chardonnay won the first double Platinum Award ever given by the American Wine Competition. Jackson passed away on April 21, 2011, at the age of 81, leaving behind the highest-selling brand of “super-premium” wine in the United States. In 1974, Jess Jackson and his wife, Jane Kendall, purchased and converted a pear and walnut orchard in Lakeport, California into a vineyard. In 1982, a downturn in the grape market discouraged Jackson from selling grapes, so he took the opportunity to create his own winery, Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates. This was a wise decision, since today, with 14,000 acres across California’s Sonoma County and numerous distinctions, Kendall-Jackson is one of the most successful wineries in America. Read less

Sweet and caramelly on the nose with notes of carob, dill and smoke. This is broad and very soft in the mouth with spicy herbal/vanilla-tinged blackberry fruit topped with some dill and wood spice. You can’t fault it for lacking flavor or complexity, but it does feel extracted on the finish with surprising fruit tannins for Zinfandel. There is not much length here either. All in all, a perfectly serviceable and somewhat varietal Zin, but there are better options at this price. 84pts

This is a big, full Zinfandel that’s blended with 19% Petite Sirah and 1% Chardonnay. With the right balance between fruit and spice, the wine is a liquid version of blackberry jam on toast.

The 2010 Zinfandel Vintner’s Reserve is another attractive, up-front wine in this entry-level series. Dark cherries, plums, tobacco, menthol and hard candy are all layered into the expressive finish. The 2010 is varietally true, nicely balanced and reasonably priced. What else can you ask for? The 2010 is 80% Zinfandel and 20% Petite Sirah. Anticipated maturity: 2013–2016.
