Jess Stonestreet Jackson, founder of Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, was a legend in the wine industry. Thanks to his dedication and skill, he popularized Chardonnay in the United States, with the best-selling Chardonnay in America for over 20 years. In 1983, just one year after he founded Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, his Chardonnay won the first double Platinum Award ever given by the American Wine Competition. Jackson passed away on April 21, 2011, at the age of 81, leaving behind the highest-selling brand of “super-premium” wine in the United States. In 1974, Jess Jackson and his wife, Jane Kendall, purchased and converted a pear and walnut orchard in Lakeport, California into a vineyard. In 1982, a downturn in the grape market discouraged Jackson from selling grapes, so he took the opportunity to create his own winery, Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates. This was a wise decision, since today, with 14,000 acres across California’s Sonoma County and numerous distinctions, Kendall-Jackson is one of the most successful wineries in America. Read less

Here's a supple, polished Merlot that shows lots of North Coast class. It's fully dry, with rich, smooth tannins and complex flavors of black currants, cedar and herbs. Good buy for under $20.

The cherry, mocha, and chocolate-scented 2006 Vintner's Reserve Merlot (nearly 100% estate-grown Merlot fruit) is also quite good. Both of these reds posses 2-3 years of longevity.

Another clear upgrade in quality is the 2007 Vintner's Reserve Merlot. This is even stronger than the 2006, which was an upgrade over earlier efforts. Elegant mocha and berry fruit intermixed with some herbs, coffee, and spice make for a delicious, round wine that is actually a blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, all from Sonoma. Drink it over the next 2-4 years.

A sound, clean, dry Merlot from various parts of Sonoma County. Elegant and classy, with firm tannins framing rich flavors of red and black cherries, red currants, tobacco, cola and sweet, smoky sandalwood. Quite impressive at this price.

Rich and flavorful with soft cherry and berry fruit. Ideal with beef, lamb or pasta with light tomato sauces.

Lean, with a strong toasted oak shade to the tart cherry, currant and herb flavors. finishes lean, but the tannins are balanced, not drying. Drink now through 2003.

Wonderful plum, spice, currant and wild berry flavors. The soft tannins of this Bordeaux varietal carry these aromas and flavors to a long lingering finish — one that beckons for another sip, or better...a glass!
