Kendall-Jackson Vintners Reserve Syrah 2010

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Low on the nose but true to its varietal roots with soft layers of violet, blood, and blackberry fruit laid over a well integrated base of oaky spice. In the mouth this is a bit low in acid, rich and matte on the palate. The wood tannins immediately intrude on the rich, soft and rather attractive palate with its violet candy and wild plum flavors. A modest finish wraps things up here though those aggressive tannins do linger in the mouth. Fairly well done if seemingly over extracted. 84pts

Jess Stonestreet Jackson, founder of Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, was a legend in the wine industry. Thanks to his dedication and skill, he popularized Chardonnay in the United States, with the best-selling Chardonnay in America for over 20 years. In 1983, just one year after he founded Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, his Chardonnay won the first double Platinum Award ever given by the American Wine Competition. Jackson passed away on April 21, 2011, at the age of 81, leaving behind the highest-selling brand of “super-premium” wine in the United States. In 1974, Jess Jackson and his wife, Jane Kendall, purchased and converted a pear and walnut orchard in Lakeport, California into a vineyard. In 1982, a downturn in the grape market discouraged Jackson from selling grapes, so he took the opportunity to create his own winery, Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates. This was a wise decision, since today, with 14,000 acres across California’s Sonoma County and numerous distinctions, Kendall-Jackson is one of the most successful wineries in America. Read less

Fresh and nicely focused on the nose with clean, cedary oak supporting red currant and raspberry fruit topped with some floral violet and vegetal nuances. Low acid and soft on entry, this is rich with black cherry and blackberry fruit over a base of leather, toast and vanilla with a nice edgy feel to the modest tannins and a hint of tar on the back end. The finish is quite attractive with very nice balance between the rather rich fruit and the firm tannins. Perhaps a bit simple, this is nonetheless well-balanced and tasty. 86pts

This is the 2010 vintage so lets see how it is after several years of aging.....sampling Aug 2017 Nice violet hues with rusty red, brown/tawny beginnings and dark red cranberry skin coloration as well.....some particulate is swirling around so decanting is an option but not necessary. The aromas have probably given way to a degree but I am picking up ripe juicy raspberry, dark chocolate, toasty vanilla, perhaps a whiff of coconut marshmallow subtle sweetness, cranberry and deeper plum/Earth robustness. The flavors follow suit....I'm finding this to be superbly well balanced, with raspberries and blueberry, blackberry/currant richness, loads of chocolate, cranberry, light oak vanilla, mild leathery notes, and overall a smooth, full flavored ripe Syrah. Perfect age and still has at least a couple more years in it!

This California Meritage is made from all five of the classic Bordeaux varietals - cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, malbec and petit verdot. It is garnet-black in colour with deep intensity. The nose has aromas of cherry, green bramble, coffee and dark chocolate. The balance is satisfactory. Plum and chocolate on the palate with a medium, slightly bitter finish.

Bold, concentrated aromas and flavors of wild berry, spice and smoke. Lush and full on the palate, showing elegance through the lingering finish.

This is really quite a successful wine. It shows an array of ripe, juicy blackberry, cherry, plum, coffee and spice flavors that are wrapped in rich tannins, a big wine with some true elegance.

This is a young, sharp, jammy wine but has a depth of fruit and a rich structure that make it awfully likeable. Blackberries, cherries, blueberries, cocoa, coffee, it all adds up to a palate sensation.

This softly appealing Syrah has pie-filling flavors of cherries and blackberries, with cinnamon spice, brown sugar and baked crust overtones. Itrsquo;s a dry, interesting wine that belies its everyday price.

Smooth as melted chocolate, full of cherry flavor, this chewy syrah is broad and simple. Serve it cool at a cookout.

The 1998 Syrah Vintnerrsquo;s Reserve exhibits chocolate, blackberry and pepper-like aromas, medium body, and abundant fruit in its soft personality.
