Kendall Jackson Vintner's Reserve Pinot Noir California 2009
Fairly herbal on the nose. Not intensely but noticeably herbal before chocolate and blackberry notes become more obvious. This is smooth as silk in the mouth with integrated acidity and soft tannins embedded in rich yet not particularly intense blackberry, black cherry and currant fruit. There's a nice dollop of vanilla spice ice cream on the back end, then more black cherry and vanilla ice cream flavors on the modest finish. Lots of easy appeal. 87ptsAdd winemaker's notes

The 2002 Vintner's Reserve Pinot Noir is a blend of equal parts fruit from Monterey, Santa Barbara, and the North Coast. It offers pleasant currant, plum, and dried herb characteristics in addition to a pleasant, open-knit style, good fruit, and medium body. Drink it over the next 1-2 years.
Aromas of fresh raspberry, blackberry and cherry are tinged with hints of smoky tea.
From the very good '99 California Pinot vintage, here's an affordable and elegant choice, offering pleasant black cherry and red currant flavors that are round, firming up on the finish, where the tannins show their strength. Drink now through 2004.
From six coastal counties, a varietally true Pinot at an everyday price, which is a rare thing. Delicate aromas of beet, mushroom, hard spice, tea and black cherry precede a balanced, silky, dry wine, with good berry flavors and a sprinkling of dusty tannins.
From coastal counties between Mendocino and Santa Barbara, a nice, supple wine that has plenty of Pinot character. Don't expect depth or ageability, but this black raspberry-flavored wine has soft, silky tannins and a spicy finish.
A wine that has improved dramatically over the last few years is the Vintner's Reserve Pinot Noir. There are 100,000+ cases of the 2003, a blend of 98% Pinot Noir and 2% Syrah, all produced from Sonoma Coast and North Coast vineyards. Aged completely in French barrels, with malolactic in barrel (17% new oak), it offers classic Pinot characteristics of forest floor, figs, plums, red currants, and cherries along with a touch of smoke in the background. This round, tasty Pinot must be tasted to be fully appreciated.
A real breakthrough is the 2008 Vintner's Reserve Pinot Noir. Entirely from Jackson Estate vineyards, this wine is loaded with rhubarb, wild strawberry, cherry, and berry fruit in a medium-bodied, very Pinot Noir-tasting style. Dark ruby-colored with good freshness and liveliness, there are just under 100,000 cases of this Pinot Noir. The lowest level of the Kendall-Jackson empire, the Vintner's Reserve series, goes from strength to strength. For consumers hoping to maximize their dollar value, these serious wines are consistent choices. Their Chardonnay has always been good, but dramatic increases in quality have taken place in the Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon programs.
