Kendall-Jackson Summation Red Blend 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Syrah, Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petite Sirah Sweet and oaky on the nose and yet at the same time this offers up lovely notes of herb inflected raspberry fruit framed but note of bitter greens and tarragon and mint. A bit heavy in the mouth but smooth as felt without a hint of either tannin nor acid present in the mouth. A bit heavy but not chewy, this does deliver plenty of gently spiced black cherry, earthy plum and slightly meaty flavors with a hint of black olive on the palate. The finish is a bit short and does turn a bit chewy and extracted. I can see the appeal here, it’s a remarkably smooth and easy drinking wine with an attractive flavor profile and reasonable complexity but it does lack some life in the mouth and particularly on the finish which has an underlying bitterness. 82pts

Jess Stonestreet Jackson, founder of Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, was a legend in the wine industry. Thanks to his dedication and skill, he popularized Chardonnay in the United States, with the best-selling Chardonnay in America for over 20 years. In 1983, just one year after he founded Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, his Chardonnay won the first double Platinum Award ever given by the American Wine Competition. Jackson passed away on April 21, 2011, at the age of 81, leaving behind the highest-selling brand of “super-premium” wine in the United States. In 1974, Jess Jackson and his wife, Jane Kendall, purchased and converted a pear and walnut orchard in Lakeport, California into a vineyard. In 1982, a downturn in the grape market discouraged Jackson from selling grapes, so he took the opportunity to create his own winery, Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates. This was a wise decision, since today, with 14,000 acres across California’s Sonoma County and numerous distinctions, Kendall-Jackson is one of the most successful wineries in America. Read less

This smells sweet and fruit with an immediate hit of wild cherry candy and vanilla on the nose that reminds me of cherry coke or something similar. Aromatically monolithic with some oak nuances and a hint of bay leaf emerging with time. Showing decent balance in the mouth, this delivers a nice hit of cherry pie filling with flourishes of cinnamon and bitter chocolate shavings before becoming dominated by dry woody tannins on the backend. The tannins take full control on the short, dry finish. 83pts

WOW! This is a hidden gem. I believe we opened a 2007 and were amazed by this full-bodied wonder. I will be buying this by the case. For the price (under $16) it is AMAZING. It has the nose and body of a high-end cab...this was a true find!!!

Never follow a good bottle of wine with a so-so bottle. Once again California disappoints me. No value here.

Another terrific value, the 2012 Merlot Vintner’s Reserve is a tasty, easygoing red to drink over the near-term. Savory herbs, gravel, smoke and tobacco add nuance to a core of dark fruit in a friendly, supple Merlot with plenty of appeal.

'Intense wild berry and mocha flavors are accented by black cherry, currant and anise notes. Well structured, yet subtle tannins create a luxuriously smooth mouthfeel followed by a complex, rich and elegant finish.' - Randy Ullom, Winemaster

Intricate layers of black cherry, plum, currant, and wild berry mingle with a hint of spice. The soft, delicate tannins of this Bordeaux varietal carry these aromas and flavors to a long lingering finish.

An expressive version of the variety, this includes tiny percentages of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Leathery plum and blueberry are the standouts in terms of aromas and flavors, with a soft, spicy streak that lifts the experience, finishing in a dusting of cocoa powder.

Zesty and polished with red currant aromas and well-structured dark cherry caramel and herb flavors finishing with ripe tannins. Drink now through 2017. - T.F. Wine Spectator.
