Kendall-Jackson Riesling Vintner's Reserve Monterey County 2017

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Fruity apple and lemon aromas greet the nose along with hints of sweet flowers and honeycomb. This is fairly low acid, particularly for a Riesling, so think soft and broad in the mouth with slightly creamy caramel-tinged apple fruit and some candied cherry notes on the mid-palate followed by ripe, sweet pear fruit. The finish is modest and a touch coarse with a hint of bitterness. Simple, fruity and somewhat atypical for Riesling. 82pts

Jess Stonestreet Jackson, founder of Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, was a legend in the wine industry. Thanks to his dedication and skill, he popularized Chardonnay in the United States, with the best-selling Chardonnay in America for over 20 years. In 1983, just one year after he founded Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, his Chardonnay won the first double Platinum Award ever given by the American Wine Competition. Jackson passed away on April 21, 2011, at the age of 81, leaving behind the highest-selling brand of “super-premium” wine in the United States. In 1974, Jess Jackson and his wife, Jane Kendall, purchased and converted a pear and walnut orchard in Lakeport, California into a vineyard. In 1982, a downturn in the grape market discouraged Jackson from selling grapes, so he took the opportunity to create his own winery, Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates. This was a wise decision, since today, with 14,000 acres across California’s Sonoma County and numerous distinctions, Kendall-Jackson is one of the most successful wineries in America. Read less

A lot of grapefruit, grapefruit pith, lime and slightly caramel notes great the nose. This has bags of acid on the palate, aggressively so, and while they balance the sugar well, they are raw and uncovered at the same time. There’s not much flavor here, just the sensation of acid and sweetness on the palate with a weird finish that combines bitter grapefruit oil with a light dried fruit sweetness and a long, harsh acidic finale. A tough wine to like. 72pts

It was pleasant overall, with a medium fruity taste and smell, but a little more bitter than I would expect from a Riesling. I found it medium-dry, which may have contributed to the bitter I noticed - it didn't remove all moisture after a sip, but left a distinct aftertaste. I would buy it again, but it's certainly not my first choice.

For the price there are definitely better Riesling's but I can't complain with the taste and aroma!
