Kendall-Jackson Merlot California 2004

84 points. Nose really does this one in, drops the score for me a lot. The first thing I notice on the nose is Windex; then...MAYBE...a hint of berries. First sip; I taste darkness. Pure dark berries, then it transitions to bittersweet chocolate on the sides of the tongue and cheeks. It does linger on the palate like most Merlot's I have tried. Pretty dry at the end, leaves a good "mouth-puckerin' ", again, like most Merlot's I have tried. Not a bad wine once it is in the mouth, but the nose is initially off-setting. Overall ... not too bad, but nothing outstanding. Honestly, it is what I expected from a major winery.
This wine revived my faith in Merlot. I liked the rich purple color and intense berry redolence. It's full bodied, smooth, and well balanced on the palate. It had a dry prolonged finish which I like. I drank it with leftover steak from Ruby Tuesdays which paired better than the diet soda I had at the restaurant. It also paired well with a Salisbury steak TV dinner.
