Kendall-Jackson Grand Reserve Merlot Sonoma County 2014

Editorial Review by Snooth Editorial:

Soft red fruit aromas of raspberry and sweet cherry with a bit of chalky earth and some floral notes on the nose. Dusty and dry in the mouth, this delivers a rich red fruit palate with a dose of medicine and dark chocolate towards the finish. Good acidity and fresh earthiness towards the finish add some complexity here.

Jess Stonestreet Jackson, founder of Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, was a legend in the wine industry. Thanks to his dedication and skill, he popularized Chardonnay in the United States, with the best-selling Chardonnay in America for over 20 years. In 1983, just one year after he founded Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, his Chardonnay won the first double Platinum Award ever given by the American Wine Competition. Jackson passed away on April 21, 2011, at the age of 81, leaving behind the highest-selling brand of “super-premium” wine in the United States. In 1974, Jess Jackson and his wife, Jane Kendall, purchased and converted a pear and walnut orchard in Lakeport, California into a vineyard. In 1982, a downturn in the grape market discouraged Jackson from selling grapes, so he took the opportunity to create his own winery, Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates. This was a wise decision, since today, with 14,000 acres across California’s Sonoma County and numerous distinctions, Kendall-Jackson is one of the most successful wineries in America. Read less

Fairly light and fresh on the nose with an attractive blend of underlying tarragon and dill elements wrapped up with creamy, toasty oak and bright cranberry, candied cherry fruit. This feels rather soft and smooth in the mouth with everything tightly in its place. There's plenty of acidity here but also a bit of sweetness to help balance it out, leaving the impression of softness in the mouth and an almost flannelly texture. There's fine cherry fruit along with obvious toasty oak spice in an easy-to-drink package. The finish shows a hint of heat and gains some sticky length from the sweetness. You really get a sense of each of the elements as they lack some balance on the finale. 86pts

One of my favorites. Rich and round, with ripe plum, cooked cherries and chocolate flavors. Medium-bodied with a lingering finish.

The wine is smooth and the chalky tannins are refined and elegant through the lengthy finish. — Randy Ullom, Winemaster Vintage Profile: After several tough vintages, 2012 was a pleasant change for the better: a long, warm growing season with no significant heat spikes or drenching rain. The harvest was much larger than expected for bordeaux reds, with beautiful fruit in most vineyard blocks. 2012 is going to be a tremendous vintage in the bottle for many years to come. The 2009 Merlot Vintner's Reserve shows excellent plumpness and juiciness along with an open, approachable personality. Ripe red berries, flowers, licorice and spices are some of the notes that flow from this flavorful Merlot. Subtle floral and earthy notes add complexity on the finish. This is another strong performance in the Vintner's Reserve series. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2014. "Intricate layers of black cherry, plum, currant, and wild berry mingle with a hint of spice. The soft, delicate tannins of this Bordeaux varietal carry these aromas and flavors to a long lingering finish." - Randy Ullom, Winemaster Statistical Information Appellation: Sonoma County Composition: 96.1% Merlot 1.9% Malbec 1.4% Cabernet Sauvignon .4% Cabernet Franc .1% Carmenere Growing Regions: 79.6% Sonoma County 14.6% Mendocino County 5.8% Napa County Alcohol: 13.5% T.A.: 0.58/100ml pH: 3.57 ** SOLD OUT **
