Kendall-Jackson Grand Reserve Merlot Sonoma County 2013

External Review by We Speak Wine:

Winemaking Philosophy: Grand Reserve is a winemaker’s blend of our mountain, ridge, hillside and benchland grapes grown along California’s cool coastal appellations. We select grapes from our best estate vineyards and then monitor, taste and guide each individual lot throughout the winemaking process. Each lot is kept separate, barrel-aged and crafted—boutique winery style. Our winemakers have an unmatched palette of flavors, toast levels and terroir nuances from which they masterfully blend these exemplary rich, deep and complex wines. Winemaker Notes: Red currant and mixed cherry flavors with background notes of chocolate and cedar box. The wine is smooth and the rich chalky tannins are refined and elegant through the lengthy finish. — Randy Ullom, Winemaster Composition: 98% Merlot 0.9% Cabernet Franc 0.7% Malbec 0.3% Cabernet Sauvignon 0.1% Petite Verdot Barrel Aging: 17 months aging in 88% French oak, 28% is new French Oak and 12% American Oak Alcohol: 14.5% T.A.: 0.58g/100mL pH: 3.60

Jess Stonestreet Jackson, founder of Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, was a legend in the wine industry. Thanks to his dedication and skill, he popularized Chardonnay in the United States, with the best-selling Chardonnay in America for over 20 years. In 1983, just one year after he founded Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, his Chardonnay won the first double Platinum Award ever given by the American Wine Competition. Jackson passed away on April 21, 2011, at the age of 81, leaving behind the highest-selling brand of “super-premium” wine in the United States. In 1974, Jess Jackson and his wife, Jane Kendall, purchased and converted a pear and walnut orchard in Lakeport, California into a vineyard. In 1982, a downturn in the grape market discouraged Jackson from selling grapes, so he took the opportunity to create his own winery, Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates. This was a wise decision, since today, with 14,000 acres across California’s Sonoma County and numerous distinctions, Kendall-Jackson is one of the most successful wineries in America. Read less
