Kendall-Jackson Grand Reserve Meritage Red Sonoma 2012

External Review by WineExpress.com:

Kendall-Jackson's Grand Reserve is a winemaker’s blend of mountain, ridge, hillside and benchland grapes grown along California’s cool coastal appellations. Grapes are hand selected from their best estate vineyards and each individual lot is kept separate and handcrafted—boutique winery style throughout the winemaking process. A blend of all 5 Bordeaux variety grapes, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon from Alexander Valley, 30% Merlot from Knights Valley, Bennett Valley and Alexander Valley, 14% Cabernet Franc from Alexander Valley 13% Malbec from Alexander Valley and Knights Valley and finally 13% Petit Verdot from Alexander Valley. Antonio Galloni scored it 90 points saying "The 2012 Meritage Red Wine Grand Reserve is terrific. Impeccable in its balance, the 2012 is racy and expressive from start to finish. New leather, smoke, menthol and grilled herbs wrap around a core of generous dark fruit in a wine that offers plenty of up-front appeal." and Robert Parker scored this 89-91+ saying "Moving toward their top-of-the-line proprietary reds, Kendall-Jackson’s 2012 Meritage Grand Reserve is 30.7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28.1% Merlot, 13.9% Cabernet Franc, 13.7% Malbec and 13.6% Petit Verdot, all coming from Sonoma and primarily aged in French oak (28% was new). Licorice, graphite, mulberry and black cherry fruit jump from the glass of this medium-bodied, nicely concentrated wine with sweet tannin and toasty oak in the background."

Jess Stonestreet Jackson, founder of Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, was a legend in the wine industry. Thanks to his dedication and skill, he popularized Chardonnay in the United States, with the best-selling Chardonnay in America for over 20 years. In 1983, just one year after he founded Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, his Chardonnay won the first double Platinum Award ever given by the American Wine Competition. Jackson passed away on April 21, 2011, at the age of 81, leaving behind the highest-selling brand of “super-premium” wine in the United States. In 1974, Jess Jackson and his wife, Jane Kendall, purchased and converted a pear and walnut orchard in Lakeport, California into a vineyard. In 1982, a downturn in the grape market discouraged Jackson from selling grapes, so he took the opportunity to create his own winery, Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates. This was a wise decision, since today, with 14,000 acres across California’s Sonoma County and numerous distinctions, Kendall-Jackson is one of the most successful wineries in America. Read less
