Kendall-Jackson Grand Reserve Chardonnay Santa Barbara & Monterey Counties 2016

External Review by We Speak Wine:

REGIONAL EXPRESSION: Grand Reserve is a winemaker’s blend of our mountain, ridge, hillside and benchland grapes grown along California’s cool coastal appellations. We hand select grapes from our best estate vineyards and then monitor, taste and hand-hold each individual lot throughout the winemaking process. Each lot is kept separate, barrel-aged and crafted—boutique winery style. Our winemakers have an unmatched palette of avors, toast levels and terroir nuances from which they masterfully blend these exemplary rich, deep and complex wines. KEY POINTS: · 70% of the wine is from the same vineyard blocks year-to-year, ensuring greater consistency and enhanced complexity with each vintage · Sur lie aged with lees stirred twice monthly to integrate fruit and oak and promote a creamy mouthfeel · All of our estate vineyards are certied sustainable by the CCSW (Certied California Sustainable Winegrowing) and SIP (Sustainability in Practice) programs · Monterey County’s hillside fruit brings Meyer lemon and lime to the nose · Santa Barbara County provides tropical fruit and pineapple VINTAGE: In 2016, we had one of the earliest seasons ever. From bud break to harvest, we were about one month early on all fronts. Yet with this shift, the growing days were essentially the same as a “normal” season. WINEMAKER NOTES: Lush tropical fruit intertwines with lemon, lime and floral notes. Elegantly layered, this wine exhibits a rich texture and firm backbone with a hint of vanilla and spice to round out the long finish. — Randy Ullom, Winemaster Barrel Aging: 9 months aging in 81% French oak (28% new) with the balance in American oak T.A.: 0.61g/100ml pH: 3.51 Alcohol: 14.5%

Jess Stonestreet Jackson, founder of Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, was a legend in the wine industry. Thanks to his dedication and skill, he popularized Chardonnay in the United States, with the best-selling Chardonnay in America for over 20 years. In 1983, just one year after he founded Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, his Chardonnay won the first double Platinum Award ever given by the American Wine Competition. Jackson passed away on April 21, 2011, at the age of 81, leaving behind the highest-selling brand of “super-premium” wine in the United States. In 1974, Jess Jackson and his wife, Jane Kendall, purchased and converted a pear and walnut orchard in Lakeport, California into a vineyard. In 1982, a downturn in the grape market discouraged Jackson from selling grapes, so he took the opportunity to create his own winery, Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates. This was a wise decision, since today, with 14,000 acres across California’s Sonoma County and numerous distinctions, Kendall-Jackson is one of the most successful wineries in America. Read less
