Kendall-Jackson Cabernet Sauvignon Vintner's Reserve California 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Lots of dill and vanilla on the nose covers up some of the detail of the raspberry jam undertones. This is soft and smooth with super polished tannins and low acidity lending this a bit of mouth-filling richness. Though not sticky, this does lack some freshness, delivering ripe cherry and plum flavors wrapped in soft, creamy chocolate and cinnamon spiced nuances. A wine of texture more than flavor, easy to drink and a safe bet for a holiday gift. 86pts

Jess Stonestreet Jackson, founder of Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, was a legend in the wine industry. Thanks to his dedication and skill, he popularized Chardonnay in the United States, with the best-selling Chardonnay in America for over 20 years. In 1983, just one year after he founded Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, his Chardonnay won the first double Platinum Award ever given by the American Wine Competition. Jackson passed away on April 21, 2011, at the age of 81, leaving behind the highest-selling brand of “super-premium” wine in the United States. In 1974, Jess Jackson and his wife, Jane Kendall, purchased and converted a pear and walnut orchard in Lakeport, California into a vineyard. In 1982, a downturn in the grape market discouraged Jackson from selling grapes, so he took the opportunity to create his own winery, Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates. This was a wise decision, since today, with 14,000 acres across California’s Sonoma County and numerous distinctions, Kendall-Jackson is one of the most successful wineries in America. Read less

It's an ok wine but a bit too acidic for my palate

This is one of those "Smells like walking into a Cinnabon" wines. Pure buttered/glazed strudel or pastry aroma. This wine is pretty sweet, and very fruity. Not much Cinnabon in the actual flavor, just mostly fruit and sweetness. Although it was a little bit buttery, and there was some vanilla. Don't take the fact that I am not rating it highly, as saying it's bad. It just doesn't fit my personal tastes. But if you are a fan of the buttered-pastry smelling wines. and a fan of big fruit, and some sweetness, this is a wine for you. But for me, it didn't fit the typical "Cab" profile. No big tannins to speak of. Note: this is for the "Jackson Estates" Sonoma County version

Surprisingly good, particularly for this price. It has a floral scent and a very rich flavor. The taste is very gentle, but elegant and meaningful, with a beautiful color as well as a fresh taste of black cherry. You won't regret buying one.

Pretty simple on the nose and palate. Not too exciting overall.

Tasting Notes: Aromas of lush, bright black cherry, blackberry and cassis draw you in. Round, rich, seamless tannins provide a robust backbone and supple mid-palate. Notes of cedar, vanilla and a hint of mocha linger on the finish. — Randy Ullom, Winemaster Key Points: • Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are blended with Merlot for softness, Cabernet Franc for tannins, and Petit Verdot to enhance the mouthfeel. • Sonoma County mountain and hillside vineyards add black cherry flavors and superb wine structure. • Mendocino County mountain vineyards impart wild blackberry, cassis and mocha flavors. • Aged 8 months in French (52%) and American (32%) oak barrels for a wine that is rich and round. • Artisan winemaking techniques, such as cold soaking and extended maceration were used to enhance and simultaneously soften the tannins, deepen the color and intensify the flavors. • The coolness of the 2012 vintage enhances the elegance. I tasted seven separate Cabernet Sauvignons from Kendall-Jackson. The least expensive wine (now up to $30.00 a bottle, and all from Sonoma) is their 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Vintner’s Reserve. They obviously made a choice to go with higher-quality vineyards that raise the price. This is primarily Cabernet Sauvignon (92.7%, and the rest Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Syrah, Tannat and Malbec). Not a lot of new oak is used, although nearly two-thirds of it is French and the rest American. This is probably the best Vintner’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon I’ve ever tasted. Sweet black cherries, blackcurrants, licorice, forest floor and subtle barrique notes are followed by a succulent, fleshy, medium-bodied wine loaded with fruit and velvety tannins. This wine will drink well, and possibly even improve, over the next 8–10 years.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Vintner’s Reserve is an excellent choice for drinking over the next few years. Grilled herbs, cedar, new leather and dark red stone fruits add nuance on the soft, supple finish.

Ripe and rustic, this is chewy and agreeable in a pleasant, straightforward style, with a tannic edge to the dried berry fruit. Drink now through 2018.

The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Vintner’s Reserve (260,410 cases) is surprisingly European in style for a K-J wine. Nearly all Cabernet Sauvignon with just tiny dollops of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Malbec, it comes from Sonoma (88%) and Mendocino with a little bit from the Central Coast and Napa. Aged eight months in French and American oak, it offers up hints of licorice, bouquet garni, roasted herbs, and red and black currants, and medium-bodied, pretty, soft fruit. This wine could easily pass for a very good cru bourgeois from Bordeaux. Enjoy it over the next 2–3 years.
