Ken Forrester Chenin Blanc Stellenbosch Petit 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

87 points Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): Pale, bright yellow. High-toned aromas of mint and lime, with hints of honey and resin. Supple and bright, with attractive citrus fruit flavor complicated by a note of nutmeg. Not the last word in intensity or grip, but very easy to drink-and always a splendid value. (Mar/Apr 2009)

A great bargain ($8-$9 in the D.C./Baltimore area) and very drinkable Chenin Blanc from South Africa's Stellenbosch region. The wine displays a pale white color and light body with citrus, limes and minerals on the nose. In the mouth the chalky minerality balances with moderate acidity for a soft feel, yet still up to fish on the grill, summer pasta dishes and just lovely with a chilled cucumber gazpacho. On the palette it offers up green apple and lime flavors with a strong presence of the classic Stellenbosch chalky minerals. A light and lively personality with just enough oomph to pair with lighter summer fair or to just enjoy on a warm summer evening on the deck.

Anyone who loves New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc needs to taste this very quaffable Chenin Blanc from South Africa. It's herbal and ripe, with the slightest touch of residual sugar. Perhaps the best part is that it's not a wine you have to think about too much: it tastes great and it's easy to drink.
