Keenan Spring Mountain Estate Cabernet Franc 2012

Member Review by EMark:

Beautiful dark purple color. Rustic woody nose, but, also, a hint of alcohol. On entry lots of dried fruit flavor—raisins and prunes, but without the sweetness. Some of that road tar sensation. This, to me, brings in complexity after the fruity entry. Pretty serious unresolved tannins. I don’t discount a wine just because of tannin. Tannin is a good thing. I think that there is sufficient tartness here to suggest that this wine can benefit from additional years in the bottle. Good today, but better in the future.

High in the Mayacamas Range, at an elevation of 1,700 feet above the Napa Valley floor, are Spring Mountain and the Robert Keenan Winery and vineyards. This area was first identified as prime vineyard land by Peter Conradi in the late 19th century when he planted 100 acres of terraced vineyard in Zinfandel and Syrah grapes. The Conradi Winery operated until Prohibition when the vineyards and winery fell out of use. In 1974, Robert Keenan purchased 180 acres of forest on the defunct Conradi Winery site. No vines remained. Only the crumbling walls of the former winery and a few old broken tanks told of its history, but Robert was certain the mountain top vineyards would be perfect for an estate winery. He replaced tree stumps and rocks with rows of Cabernet and Chardonnay, hired an engineer to redesign the original winery structure, and brought in a contractor to begin construction. The winery was made operational just in time for the harvest of 1977. From that time on, Keenan has earned a great reputation for producing wines of intense character and renowned acclaim. Read less

Very much a musty/viney nose. On the tongue you know this one is a brute. What black fruit may be detected by the tip of the tongue is there is swept away by earthiness and tobacco or dark chocolate flavors as the wine passes farther along the tongue and palate. Pair this one with your biggest beef roast meals.

Tobacco, flowers and new leather are some of the notes that emerge from Keenan's 2009 Cabernet Franc. Open, radiant and expressive, the 2009 impresses with its mid-palate pliancy and juicy, resonant finish. Stylistically, the 2009 is more about place... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. Keenan has done a fabulous job with the 2005 Cabernet Franc, a varietal that excels on Spring Mountain. A very unique and delicious wine. Cabernet Franc is the primary grape found in top Bordeaux Chateaux Cheval Blanc and Le Dome. This Napa Valley version is rich and intense. Robert Parker scored it 94 points and said "A limited production cuvee, the 2004 Cabernet Franc, from the Spring Mountain estate vineyard, exhibits a lovely floral, blueberry, and raspberry-scented perfume, medium body, superb intensity, and a light, ethereal character. It is an uplifted, beautiful effort that shows what Cabernet Franc can achieve in the hands of a conscientious grower and superb winemaking. Drink it over the next decade." Extremely Limited.
