Kay Bros Amery 2003

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

A glorious example of South Australian Shiraz is the 2002 Shiraz Hillside. Made from relatively young vines (8-34 years of age), this flamboyant, pleasant 2002 is impossible to resist. Already rocking and rolling, it has 10-15 years of aging potential. A deep plum/ruby/purple hue is followed by glorious aromas of black fruits, flowers, dusty, loamy, truffle-like scents, and a classic combination of pepper and licorice. The wine saturates the palate with a seamless integration of acidity, tannin, and alcohol (15%). The finish is opulent and multilayered. This wine is finished with a screw cap.

Bordering St.Vincent's Gulf, 40 kms south of Adelaide, the Kay Brothers McLaren Vale Amery Vineyards grace the rolling foothills of the Southern Mt.Lofty Ranges. Established in 1890 by Australian born brothers Herbert and Frederick Kay the Heritage Listed Kays Amery Winery celebrated its first grape crush in 1895 and is the oldest McLaren Vale winery still in founding family hands with third generation Colin Kay continuing the family winemaking tradition. The winery is located at the top of a hill 5 kms from the McLaren Vale Township and the Cellar Door, which is part of the original Winery complex, boasts some stunning panoramic views of the surrounding picturesque valleys and hillsides. The welcome at Cellar Door is as friendly as the view is seductive so allow plenty of time during your visit to taste the renowned selection of traditional premium estate wines and explore the Kay Family diaries dating from 1891. Kay's are specialist traditional red wine makers utilising grapes from their own 22-hectare Amery Vineyard. The grape varieties grown are Shiraz (including the 1892 Block 6), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Viognier, Grenache, Mourvedre (Mataro) and Muscat Blanc. Colin Kay's winemaking philosophy is to make rich full-bodied fruit-driven wines (using the original Open Fermenters and Basket Press) with small oak cask maturation. The Kay Brothers Amery Vineyard range of fine wines includes Block 6 Shiraz (from vines planted in 1892), Hillside Shiraz, Basket Press Shiraz, Grenache, Moscato, Founders Very Old Tawny Solera, and Founders Grand Liqueur Muscat. WA 95 Pts. - One of Australia s most traditional winemakers, Colin Kay fashions old style, high quality, distinctive Australian reds. The flagship wine, the 2003 Shiraz Block 6 (from 113-year-old vines) is a full-throttle, traditionally made Australian Shiraz boasting a dense plum/garnet/purple color in addition to a bouquet of creosote, sweet black cherries, cassis, forest floor, underbrush, and pepper. With great depth, full-bodied, powerful, concentrated flavors, high tannin, and a blockbuster finish, this distinctive Shiraz should drink well for 10-15 years. Rated 90+

One of Australia's most traditional winemakers, Colin Kay fashions old style, high quality, distinctive Australian reds. Tarry, chewy, and fleshy, the 2003 Shiraz Hillside has a bit more punch (15% alcohol) as well as a sappy character that is not present in the regular bottling. It is a broad, savory, expansively flavored, full-bodied Shiraz to enjoy over the next decade.
