Kanonkop Pinotage Stellenbosch 2007
Kanonkop Estate has been described by those in the know as being the South African equivalent of a Premier Cru or First Growth. International awards accumulated over more than a decade have gone a long way to substantiate these claims.
I had this wine at Jiko, an african-inspired restaurant at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge. It has complex flavors and a smooth finish. I usually drink Cabs and Malbecs, and while this wine was lighter than those varieties, the smooth finish was wonderful. It reminded me of a Petit Verdot I had once.

Richly fruited with mouth-coating notes of red and black berries in a medium bodied style, this wine has good structure for ageing and avoids the astringency so commonly found with this particular grape variety.
