Reminds me of smoked halibut, or sardines, garnished with dark berries, and some kind of woodsy tastes. The great outdoors, indeed.

On my second tasting, I get more of the herbal factors, like dill and sage.

Mineral gravely nose. Huge dry woodsy tannins balance out the pronounced acidity - with some peat moss, earth, and mineral soil along for the ride. Tastes a bit cloying on the palate. Definitely complex and interesting but not much fruit.

Mint, menthol, banana and tar on the nose. Spicy attack with good acidity. Good mouthfeel, but a harsh astringent tone follows, before the wine finishes on moss, soil and black cherry.

I really like this wine from the start. Nose immediately tells you this is something different. Black Pepper, allspice, and a touch of cedar. First taste is nice cranberry/cherry...boy then gives way to that classic South African leather and white pepper. Finish is long, has a bit of acidic bite, and the Cab Franc comes through beautifully. This is a great wine for the price (any price really). Served with roasted leg of Lamb and was an incredible hit.

Kanonkop’s second label. A blend of Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Marks of typical South African wine: plummy cassis, black raspberry, black cherry, grape juice, and earthy flavors wrapped in appropriate levels of tart acidity, ripe tannins, and alcohol.
