Kangarilla Road Shiraz Blend Mclaren Vale Shiraz Viognier 2003

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

The Viognier contributes beautiful floral aromatics to this wine, and the Shiraz, plenty of black pepper. The palate surges with berries and cherries mdash; taut, fresh and pure. Smooth and firm on the finish. Nicely done.

Kangarilla Road is the main road running past the vineyard towards the small village of Kangarilla, the name a derivation of the Australian Aboriginal language and refers to the abundance of resources locally. McLaren Vale is for us the best region in Australia to achieve the wine styles that we want to produce. This vineyard and winery - which was originally established back in 1975 - offers us 30 acres of mature vines that contribute rich fruit characters so typical of McLaren Vale. Kevin O'Brien is an oenologist with 20 years experience in the wine industry. Nearly black in color, but refreshing for its open-textured, sweet-spicy berry flavors, the flavors hovering gently through the long, elegant finish. Drink now through 2009.

The spectacular 2003 Shiraz/Viognier sells for a song. A blend of 92% Shiraz and 8% Viognier that was co-fermented then aged 14 months in new French oak, it represents the poor personrsquo;s Torbreck Run Rig or Guigal Cote Rotie La Mouline. Itrsquo;s hard to believe $25 still buys a wine of such marvelous quality. The uplifting nose of exotic apricot marmalade intermixed with creme de cassis, blackberry liqueur, and acacia flowers is followed by a voluptuously-textured, full-bodied wine with no hard edges. While it will not make old bones, for drinking over the next 7ndash;8 years, it is a stunning wine. The 14% alcohol is relatively low by South Australian standards.
