Winemaker's Notes:

The combination of old vine fruit produced from a traditional low-yielding clone, with a perfect soil and climate for this variety, insures a wine of substantial depth, complexity and style. The microclimate specific aromas are reminiscent of lime blossoms, linden and freshly toasted bread. The flavors are rich, powerful, but counterbalanced by an extraordinary, racy mineral acid fruit structure, which can only be derived from the unique gravel subsoil found in the Livermore Valley. All of the special essences which are drawn from the subterranean depths of real "terroir" are abundantly manifested in this singular wine.

Kalin Cellars is a small winery located in Marin County, California which produces 7,000 cases per year of wine made by completely traditional European methods. These time and labor intensive procedures severely limit the quantity - but not the quality - of wine that we are able to produce. Red wines are fermented for several weeks in wooden "cuves" and aged in new French oak barrels. These wines are neither fined nor filtered - they are naturally clarified and stabilized by settling and aging in small cooperage. White wines are fermented and aged in new French oak barrels. These wines receive the minimum of fining to achieve brilliance and stability, and are bottled without filtration. Vineyard sources are selected based on the superiority of the soil type and their being situated in the coolest possible microclimate suitable for the variety being grown. Due to the high natural acids present in cool climate fruit, all red and white wines are able to undergo complete malolactic fermentation. We produce exclusively 100% single vineyard wines. These optimal vineyard and winemaking elements combine to produce wines of exceptional complexity and balance - classic New World wines evolved from centuries of European artisanal tradition and experience. Lovely, full-bodied chardonnay. Smooth and rich. Best drunk at cool room temperature. My hosts had chilled the wine and it was not at its best. I let it sit in the glass for about 45 minutes and it was perfect.

Bottle opened today was not smooth. It was overly sweet and had a disagreeable taste. Very disappointing since the first bottle was far superior.

Once again flavor was disappointing. I am giving away the rest of my bottles. Based on my personal tasting history (this being the fourth bottle I have tasted), I would say this wine is best immediately upon release, and it quickly goes down hill from there.
