Kaiken Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

Light and simple wine, on nose tropical fruits, peaches, papaya and a hint of citrus. On mouth is light and fresh, slightly acidic, with a fruity midpalate and short finish, and a very mild body. Mineral with lovely Granny Smith and plenty of length and middle. Great beginning and end. Good option for casual solo drinking,

One of Chile’s most renowned winemakers – Auriello Montes Sr. – blazed the path of bringing his country’s premium selections to the world when he joined forces with wine industry vet Douglas Murray and partners Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand in 1988. Together, they formed Viña Montes, which became the standard for premium Chilean wines with the introduction of Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon. In the quarter century since then, the company has been instrumental in raising awareness, affinity, and acclaim for Chilean wines in over 100 countries worldwide. Hailing from Apalta in Chile’s Cochalgua Valley, Viña Montes produces 950,000 cases annually through its vineyards La Finca de Apalta (in Apalta); El Arcangel Estate (in Marchigue); and Los Nogales Estate (in Curico). Among the company labels are Montes Alpha “M,” Montes Folly, Purple Angel, Montes Alpha, Montes Classic Series, Montes Cherub, and Montes Twins. In 2004, a new cellar was created at Apalta through an investment of more than US$7 million. Chilean architect Samuel Claro, from the Claro and Swinburn Agency, created the space, which was decorated by Paula Gutierrez, a nationally renowned designer. Here, technology and equipment reside in a peaceful environment incorporating Feng Shui elements – water, air, metal and wood- to encourage harmony and a positive atmosphere, enhancing the total experience and resulting wines. My Rating 88: Well balanced body with good fruit and tannins. Nose balanced but with a hint of typical Chile wine. I don't know what it is but you could call this funky. Price is OK at Costco about $ 8

Crisp tropical fruit flavors with a slight hint of butter. Very lightly oaked. Wonderful on its own, with a favorite cheese, or with a fish or chicken entree.

Things take a more serious turn with the 2010 Chablis Mont de Milieu which is a major step up from the preceding premier crus. Fruit structure and acidity are all deftly balanced in this harmonious impeccable wine. I especially like the level of nuance and pure delineation in the glass. A round textured finish rounds things out in style. Here again the seemingly opposite contradictory qualities of the vintage are both on display. The Mont de Milieu is at once approachable yet taut. I find the combination utterly irresistible. Anticipated maturity: 2013+. -Antonio Galloni Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.

The 2010 Chardonnay Estate is a beautiful, precise wine laced with citrus zest, crushed rocks and a hint of spice from the American oak. In 2010, the Chardonnay stands out for its energy and tension. It needs another year or two to settle down, but it is already striking in its beauty. Anticipated maturity: 2013andndash;2020.

Pale yellow. Candied citrus fruit and pear aromas are complicated by notes of vanilla and smoky minerals. Juicy and incisive, offering lively Meyer lemon and quince flavors that pick up a subtle touch of anise with air. The vanilla note comes back on the spicy, tenacious finish.

The 2010 Chardonnay Montebello Estate Vineyard wraps around the palate with layers of deep expressive fruit. It shows lovely depth in an understated style. There is a level of textural depth and creaminess that isn't found in the straight Estate bottling but the 2010 never strays from the classic restrained Ridge style. This is gorgeous. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020. - Antonio Galloni Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.

Clean and refined, pure, rich and elegant, this Chardonnay features a strong mineral, lime skin and green apple presence, gaining depth and dimension before fanning out nicely on the finish. Drink now through 2018.

Inky ruby. Intense cherry, blackcurrant, licorice, pipe tobacco and cedary oak aromas show superb clarity and energy. Sweet, penetrating cherry-cola and bitter chocolate flavors are deeply concentrated but lively, picking up woodsmoke, floral pastille and allspice nuances with air. Smooth, harmonious tannins build slowly on the finish and meld seamlessly with the wine's vivacious fruit. Almost painfully young, this wine demands — and will reward — aging.

Tasting Notes:

“One sip of this wine and you know you’re in mountain territory. Bold Cabernet flavors of black cherry, wild blueberry and blackberry fill the mouth, and there’s a minerality in the background that reflects the mineral red soils of the Monte Rosso site and brings structure to the wine. The oak brings hints of cinnamon spice, vanilla and coffee without overpowering the fruit. With chalky tannins and zesty acidity, this is a gutsy Cabernet that’s built for the long haul.”
