Kaiken Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Mont-de-Milieu is one of two Premier Cru Chablis vineyards in Burgundy that are surrounded by predominantly Grand Cru vineyards. In essence this wine is Grand Cru quality at a fraction of the price. The wine displays bright crisp fruit and bright acidity with very subtle and balanced toasty oak. Pair with fish white meat and cream sauce dishes.

One of Chile’s most renowned winemakers – Auriello Montes Sr. – blazed the path of bringing his country’s premium selections to the world when he joined forces with wine industry vet Douglas Murray and partners Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand in 1988. Together, they formed Viña Montes, which became the standard for premium Chilean wines with the introduction of Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon. In the quarter century since then, the company has been instrumental in raising awareness, affinity, and acclaim for Chilean wines in over 100 countries worldwide. Hailing from Apalta in Chile’s Cochalgua Valley, Viña Montes produces 950,000 cases annually through its vineyards La Finca de Apalta (in Apalta); El Arcangel Estate (in Marchigue); and Los Nogales Estate (in Curico). Among the company labels are Montes Alpha “M,” Montes Folly, Purple Angel, Montes Alpha, Montes Classic Series, Montes Cherub, and Montes Twins. In 2004, a new cellar was created at Apalta through an investment of more than US$7 million. Chilean architect Samuel Claro, from the Claro and Swinburn Agency, created the space, which was decorated by Paula Gutierrez, a nationally renowned designer. Here, technology and equipment reside in a peaceful environment incorporating Feng Shui elements – water, air, metal and wood- to encourage harmony and a positive atmosphere, enhancing the total experience and resulting wines. Tight and still quite oaky on the nose, with inky fruit, black spice notes and nuanced tea and tobacco aromas. Soft, broad and quite generous in the mouth, this lacks the tension of the 2005 and a little of the complexity as well, though it does offer up ripe dark berry fruit that shows a little chocolate, mocha edge through the moderately long finish. 88 points

Tropical fruit, synthetic/ artificial flavour, not very intense. Too oaky aromas with vanilia dominating. Easy wine, simple, med complexity, short aftertaste. Below expectations

Mint and honey aromas, yet also has typical Chardonnay character of apple, pear, tropical fruit, spice and toast. Slightly oily on entry, it finishes long and clean.

While this Chardonnay definitely has plenty of rich California style, it shows truly impeccable balance along with supple-ness from lees aging. Expect apple and vanilla bean oak notes on the nose and palate.

Generous aromas of citrus oil, melon, and a touch of oak. Ripe nectarine and crisp red apple are accented by tropical fruit flavors typical of top California Chardonnay. This drinks like those famous Napa/Sonoma Chardonnays at a fraction of the price.

Monte Rosso has a unique red soil that produces richly intense flavors and balanced acidityin the grapes. Its rich purple hue highlights the concentrated old-vine Cabernet aromas andflavors of red and black cherries, blackberries and hints of spice, mint and a subtle minerality. It has the characteristic tannins of a refined mountain Cabernet, yet also has a velvety textureand a juicy and long finish thanks to the addition of a touch of Cabernet Franc.

Intense berry fruit and chocolate with hints of tobacco and vanilla. Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 has excellent depth and is well structured.
