What to Expect

Australia has certainly made Syrah its own, even bestowing it with a new name: Shiraz. In the warm, dry climate of Australia this noble grape, responsible for some of the grandest wines of France, produces an intense, unique expression that is distinctly Australian. The ripe grapes take on classic notes of black pepper and leather that add depth and complexity to the black cherry and plum fruits on the palate. Australian Shiraz has typically been aged in American Oak barrels which impart the wine with a distinct note of vanilla that can add to the impression of ripeness many of these wines have, but the time in barrel also allows the wines a chance to settle and reveal their rich, voluptuously styled mouthfeel.

Winemakers Notes

Robert Parker "Aged in new and one-year-old American oak, and made in a completely different style, the 2005 Shiraz The Bogan (from 25- to 105-year-old vines) is a dense purple-colored effort displaying an exuberant nose of toast, blackberries, cassis, cherries, and damp earth. It is full-bodied and powerful with fabulous purity and texture as well as a blockbuster finish. This is a classic example of Barossa Shiraz at its finest."

Deep inky purple in color with a smooth gradation in color from the rim to center. Fresh cut grass on the nose with hints of plum and dark fruit. Initial taste (10 minutes after pour) Dark fruit and licorice up front followed by a wave of heat on the back of the throat. (Taste after 30 minutes in the glass) - Much smoother. Deep rich and dark fruit taste up front and through the mid-palette (blackberry, plum and a hint of cassis). Light acidity finishes this off for excellent balance.

Big and bold, like the excellent '04 version. If anything, it emphasizes the fruit even a bit more, with less spicy complexity, but it's a black hole of plum and blackberry fruit that explodes in the mouth, staining the palate with fruity intensity. ... Bogan means black sheep, and was winemaker, Reid Boward's nickname in school. A major proportion of the fruit to make this wine, comes from our vineyard at Marananga, approximately 8 kms south west of the winery, planted in 1899. Soils are quite different here, consisting of sandy loam, followed by clay with limestone thinly dispersed. This tends to give the wine more blue fruit characters and lift combined with the intensity of the old vines.
