What to Expect

Australia has certainly made Syrah its own, even bestowing it with a new name: Shiraz. In the warm, dry climate of Australia this noble grape, responsible for some of the grandest wines of France, produces an intense, unique expression that is distinctly Australian. The ripe grapes take on classic notes of black pepper and leather that add depth and complexity to the black cherry and plum fruits on the palate. Australian Shiraz has typically been aged in American Oak barrels which impart the wine with a distinct note of vanilla that can add to the impression of ripeness many of these wines have, but the time in barrel also allows the wines a chance to settle and reveal their rich, voluptuously styled mouthfeel.

Winemakers Notes

Wine Advocate #161 (Oct 2005) KaeslerGs deep ruby/purple-tinged 2004 Shiraz Stonehorse (100% Shiraz aged in a combination of French and American oak) exhibits a big, sweet nose of blackberries, cassis, pepper, and spicy oak. Its opulent, richly fruity, full-bodied, yet well-balanced style suggests it will drink well for 10-15 years.

Reviews

A good value in old vine Barossa Shiraz, the inky/ruby/purple-hued 2005 Shiraz Stonehorse (100% Shiraz from 15- to 45-year-old vines aged in used oak for 15 months) exhibits an explosive nose of sweet black cherries, cassis, tar, spice box, and licorice. This full-bodied, sexy, up-front effort is impossible to resist. Enjoy it over the next 4-5 years. - Wine Advocate

WA 95pts. - Tasting Notes - In the glass the wine is purple and crimson with a dense centre and a youthful edge. On the nose... Aromas of cr?me de cassis, toasty oak and liquorice. On the palate, the fruit is actually quite solid...

A deep, dark purple luxurious wine. Bouquet of sweet and spicy fruit is backed by nice oak, acidity, body and a long finish. Wonderful balance.

This wine is an steal for $20 or less and showcases some of the best elements of an Aussie Shiraz.
