Justin Vineyards & Winery Red Bordeaux Blend Paso Robles Isosceles 2001

Member Review by 97mjr:

[Chart House, Surf and Turf] Ruby-red in color; blackcherry and spice on the nose; on the palate, huge dark fruit--mostly blackcherry, cola, a hint of raspberry, and spice; moderate tannins, longish finish. Improved after the first hour; initially some mint and a little syrupy quality that disappeared over time. I agree it is not at all a classic Bordeaux; it does lack some balance with its fruity blast, but it can be fun.Previously tasted this wine at Sparks and everyone loved it with a great porterhouse and mushrooms, which is a perfect pairing to balance its fruit and thickness. This time my steak was marinated in a sweet mango sauce. However, the salad bar mushrooms, though low-quality and cold, did offer a hint of the wine's potential when properly paired.

Have had this at least 4 times. Loved it the first. Liked it less each time since. This time found it a little green lacking fruit, uninspiring.

Opened a bottle one week ago to check on how this was doing as we have a few more. Decanted it about 45 minutes before drinking. My impression is that the wine is past its best days. Drink now is my advice. It doesn't retain the structure or complexity it enjoyed two year ago. When tasting without food it was a pleasing wine but didn't stand up to the ribeye.

Subtle earthy tones combine with a hint of leather in the aroma of this deep, inky-black hued wine. The entry is soft and subtle, with ample black fruit and coffee. Cherry, currant and a hint of plum evolve into layers of chocolate and caramel on the mid-palate. A soft, seamless finish is balanced by flavors of spicy French oak.

High-toned black cherry and wild berry fruit is ripe, spicy and complex, if on a modest scale. Gains depth and richness on the finish, where this picks up a hint of prune and spice. The best of two bottles tasted. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Drink now through 2012.

A bit fudge-like, with thick, soft flavors of chocolate and cassis joined by herbal notes of thyme or tea. Turns a bit drying on the finish.

A Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated Bordeaux blend, starting with lush, inviting new oak, cassis, sweet thyme, vanilla and mushroom aromas. Turns subtle, supple and elegant in the mouth, powerful and refined. Dry and long, this wine finishes with class and distinction.

A very impressive blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (91%), Cabernet Franc (6%), and Merlot (3%). It is dark magenta in color with a bright, expressive nose of raspberry pie, smoke and vanilla. The feel is textured to the hilt, dense but not overbearing and complex enough to suggest varied layers of ripe fruit. On the finish, hints of earthiness and dirt are complemented by blackberry aromas and heavy tannins, creating a perfect balance. An argument exists for further aging, but it can be enjoyed now with no harm done.

I realize this is not a North Coast offering, but it's such a sensational, impeccably high quality cuvee it merited inclusion in this report. One of the finest Bordeaux blends (93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Merlot and Cabernet Franc) I have ever tasted from Paso Robles, it offers glorious aromas of camphor, creme de cassis, smoke, and subtle oak. Voluptuously rich and full-bodied with beautiful purity as well as a sense of elegance, definition, and harmony, this gorgeously proportioned, rich proprietary red should drink well for a decade or more. Kudos to the folks at Justin for a brilliant achievement.

Aromas of sweet plum, currant and a touch of coconut lead to a ripe, rich, fleshy yet firm band of Cabernet flavors, with a mix of cherry, blackberry and a a touch of mocha, finishing with firm, ripe, integrated tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petite Verdot and Malbec. Best from 2006 through 2012.
