Julien Sunier Fleurie 2012

External Review by Prestige Wine & Spirits:

Saturated red. A perfumed, focused bouquet evokes fresh raspberry, cherry and rose oil, with a smoky mineral nuance building in the glass. Offers spicy red fruit and anise flavors and a deeper cherry pit note, with the mineral quality adding lift and cut. Closes silky and long, with gentle tannins lending grip.

The 2012 Fleurie comes from vines aged between 20 and 60-years old in the lieu-dit of “Niagara” and is raised with SO2 in wooden barrels for between 8 and 10 months. It has a very precise and transparent bouquet, much stonier than fruity, with bright red currant and cranberry scents. The palate begins as it means to go on, with vibrant acidity and almost bony tannins. This could have been shrill, but instead it is extremely well-balanced and suffused with marvelous tension, leaving the mouth with a prickly sensation on the finish. Superb. Drink now–2019.
