What to Expect

Riesling is a chameleon of a grape, able to produce world class wines that range from bone dry to unctuously sweet. Germany is most closely associated with Riesling, where all styles are made and the range of flavors runs the gamut from steely and crisp with crunchy mineral-driven flavors to fresh lime, apple and peach flavored expressions - even rich honied, candied fruit tones in the great dessert wines.

Winemakers Notes

2004 VINTAGE:

The years go by, but each is different from the last. After a 2003 vintage that was one of the earliest ever recorded, but with greatly reduced volumes and low acidity, 2004 was a much more "normal" vintage. The grapes were remarkably healthy to begin with, levels of acidity were excellent, and a comfortable volume was forecast.
After a generally damp summer, exceptionally fine weather in September sealed the destiny of this vintage, before conditions deteriorated from mid-October onwards. A vintage without late-harvest VT or SGN wines for us, but read more...

The golden rule at Hugel is "The wine is already in the grape". As soon as they arrive at the Hugel premises in the heart of Riquewihr, the grapes are classified according to precise and strict criteria of quality. The presses are filled by gravity, not by pumping. After slow crushing, only the first part of the juice is conserved to merit the famous yellow label. The individuality of each grape variety and of each level of quality is respected. This is a wine to drink now in order to fully appreciate its freshness and youth. It's a style of wine that one would like to see more often, and read more...

perfectly cooked pork with apples just edged with caramelised crispness was set against the Hugel Jubilee Riesling 2004. A wonderful match, even for someone generally unimpressed with Riesling in general. While the slight edge of kerosene/petrol (a revelation to some at the table) to the aroma divided the table, I thought it a delightful match with the subtle apple flavours of the dish and the wine playing along very nicely. The dish was rich requiring a wine of equal body; the Alsace style of Riesling being fuller than those of neighbouring Germany worked beautifully.

Light gold color with a nose that shows petrol, lemon, faint orange blossom honey and minerals. Wow, seriously don't want to take my nose out of the glass. In the mouth the acidity is lively and really does a good job of balancing the rest of the palate. Flavors run towards honey and lemon, with a rich full texture that shows peaches and more. I would have to say this is a wine I could fall in love with.

Wine Spectator ReviewPeach and lemon flavors vie with the tart structure in this lean, sharp white. There's richness, but it's wound tight and needs time to integrate. Be patient, it has potential. Best from 2008 through 2018.
