Joseph Phelps Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley 2017

Member Review by aronowm2:

Considering that most California SB is not very good, this was a pleasant surprise. Nice guava and FLUFF on the palate without being overoaked. I had this with fried fish and it was a delight. Great fruit.

A surprisingly tasty Sauvignon Blanc. As someone who enjoys this grape, mostly from France or New Zealand, I found this to be a nice mixture between the two. Pourts a nice bright golden color. Aromas of citrus and oak. The lemon zest hits the palate first and lasts throughout. In the middle, there is some oak undertones that balance out citrus, mellowing it just a tad. Finishes with ample citrus flavors, melon and vanilla oak. This is a nice medium bodied wine with excellent acidity. Has a moderate lingering on the palate. A tad pricey for a Sauvignon Blanc ($25.60 club price), but certainly tasty.

Thought I was kind of "over" Sauvignon Blanc, but this was delicious! Had an older vintage I was convinced would be over the hill, but flavors meshed elegantly and finished well. Green apple with toasted sesame flavors, slightly buttery, but not over the top. Was fantastic with scallops.

Uncharacteristically smooth Sauv Blanc. Barrel aged Sur-Lees to get a smoothness in the finish. Lots of lemon citrus in the nose with good acid but silky smooth finish.

Winemaking Notes: Grapes were picked at dawn and held overnight in cold storage before pressing to barrel for native yeast fermentation. The wine was aged for seven months in 30% new and 70% once used French oak puncheons from coopers Dargaud Jaegle, Damy and Ermitage. The lees were stirred during and after fermentation resulting in a richly textured wine with light oak influence. The 2017 Sauvignon Blanc opens with aromatic orange blossoms, freshly zested lemon peel, Honeycrisp apple and focused minerality. A bright and fresh wine with balanced acidity and a lingering lemon crème finish. Growing Season: The 2017 growing season saw much needed record-breaking winter rainfall which helped replenish our groundwater and the vines. The cool start to the season delayed budbreak, bloom and harvest in the Sauvignon Blanc blocks compared to the three previous years. Overall, the 2017 growing season was warm due to summer heat spikes. The fruit from our Home Ranch Vineyard showcased bright acidity and concentrated flavors in this vintage. Blend: 100% estate-grown Sauvignon Blanc from our Home Ranch Vineyard in St. Helena.

Winemaking Notes: Grapes are picked at dawn and held overnight in cold storage before pressing to barrel for native yeast fermentation. The 2016 Sauvignon Blanc was aged for seven months in 33% new and 67% one- to two-year-old French oak puncheons from coopers Dargaud Jaegle, Billon, Damy and Ermitage. The lees were stirred during and after fermentation resulting in a sumptuously textured wine with subtle oak influence. Tasting Notes: The 2016 Sauvignon Blanc has a fragrant bouquet of ripe lychee, lilac, rose petals, Honeycrisp apple, Meyer lemon peel and stone fruit. Fresh and focused with nicely balanced minerality, bright acidity, lemon crème and apricot. Growing Season: The 2016 Napa Valley growing season began with a warm, mild winter resulting in a very early Sauvignon Blanc bud break at the beginning of March. A normal period of bloom and veraison took place in early May and mid-July, respectively. As the growing season progressed and came to completion, the 2016 growing season was cooler compared to the previous three vintages, allowing for delicate aromas and flavors to develop slowly in the white varieties.

Winemaking Notes: Following early morning picking, grapes were held overnight in cold storage before pressing to barrel for native yeast fermentation. 2015 Sauvignon Blanc was aged for seven months in 35% new French oak puncheons and 65% one- to two-year-old French oak puncheons before bottling. The barrel coopers included Dargaud Jaegle, Billon, Damy and Ermitage. The lees were stirred during and after fermentation resulting in a richly layered, graceful wine with light oak influence. The 2015 Sauvignon Blanc showcases fragrant lime blossom, stone fruit and orange peel with tangy green apple, sumptuous lemon curd and juicy white peach. An opulent, textured mouthfeel with racy acidity frame a brightly focused wine with pleasing minerality and a lingering finish. Growing Season: The 2015 Napa Valley growing season experienced dry, mild winter and spring temperatures similar to the prior three growing seasons. The Sauvignon Blanc bud break was 50% complete by mid-March followed by an early period of bloom. May temperatures were cool, but August, September and October were consistently warm, creating conditions for one of the earliest harvests on record. Small berries and loose clusters of high quality fruit led to intensely concentrated and floral characteristics in this vintage of Sauvignon Blanc.

Winemaking Notes: After early morning picking, grapes were held overnight in cold storage before pressing to barrel for native yeast fermentation. 2013 Sauvignon Blanc was aged for seven months in 35% new French oak puncheons and 65% one to three-year-old French oak puncheons and barrels before bottling in May 2014. The coopers used included Dargaud Jaegle, Billon, Damy and Ermitage. The lees were stirred during and after fermentation for a silky, round mouthfeel and light oak influence while preserving focused acidity and finesse in the wine. This wine shows bright Mandarin orange blossom, lemon curd, citrus and honey aromas. Full, ripe flavors of Meyer lemon, pear, honeydew melon and vanilla cream fill the mouth with a streak of minerality through to the nicely balanced long citrus finish. - Winery

The long, cool growing season was advantageous for the white varieties on the property. The flavors and aromatics are excellent and the wines come across as having a great deal of freshness. The 2010 Sauvignon Blanc is abundant with aromas of melon, lemon verbena, toasted marshmallow and citrus zest with a medium-body and vibrant finish. - Winery
