Joseph Phelps Red Bordeaux Blend Napa Valley Insignia 1994

Winemaker's Notes:

In 1994, after a long, cool growing season, 65% of our crop was still hanging on the vine by October 4, when an unexpected thunderstorm swept through the Napa Valley. In its wake, a spell of warm weather dried out the vineyards and caused a rapid rise in grape sugars, and although more rain was forecast, a window of opportunity for harvesting presented itself during the week of October 9-15, when much of the crop achieved optimal ripeness. During this time we picked a total of 783 tons, or half our estimate for the entire harvest! Grape quality was excellent, and critics are citing the vintage as one of the best in the last twenty years.

My 1st place wine/Groups 2nd place wine Sweet and earthy on the nose with a little VA adding lift to the leathery, cocoa and vanilla tinged slightly stewy black berry fruits. This is so smooth on the palate with a rich soft feel that is marred by the faintest touch of heat but the rich black raspberry fruit quickly overcomes this minor note. There remain nice spicy oak nuances and the acidity keeps this fresh and juicy in the mouth while the powdery tannins add a little mouthgrab to the rich, plush fruit. Very nice detail in the mouth and with good length this is absolutely at peak right now. 95pts

Joseph Phelps has been on a hot streak since the 1991 vintage, having turned in outstanding efforts in 1992, even more exhilarating 1993s, and blockbuster 1994s.
