Joseph Phelps Red Bordeaux Blend Napa Valley Insignia 1984

External Review by JJ Buckley Fine Wines:

Last Tasted 5/94. More developed and forward than its sibling from the Eisele Vineyard, this dark ruby/purple-colored wine displays a wonderful herb, cassis, vanillin, and Asian spice-scented nose. Full-bodied, jammy, and intense, with less tannin... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. A Proprietary Blend wine from California in USA. 1984 Phelps, Joseph Insignia Proprietary Red Wine 750ml

Minty nose, gutsy structure, very firm and flavorful, with sharply focused currant and cherry fruit, and tannins tough enough to want at least five years in the cellar, maybe 10. Very distinctive. Joseph Phelps winery, established in 1972, has always been known for their innovative spirit and quality control. Phelps' Insignia was the first Bordeaux-style blend to be released under a proprietary label in California. This was a hot vintage, producing a wine that is big and robust, with round tannins. Ready to drink.
