Joseph Phelps Merlot Napa Valley 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2006 Merlot is layered with aromas and flavors of blackberry, red plum, tobacco, anise and cedar, which lead the way to a delicate tannin structure and velvety finish.

Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Hasn't evolved much since the last time I tasted it. Tannin is still showing but promise is there. Think it needs at least another year or an hour of decanting to really show.

Another Merlot and a nice one. Spice and cherry on the nose. The wine has good tannin with good acidity. Lots of red fruit and long finish.

A great fruity nose. Some subtle oak. Very rich and smooth and a nice dry finish

Dark purple with dull purple edges. Vanilla and concord grape nose. Blackberry, raspberry, slight fig, with tar and tobacco. Far less sweet than the nose would suggest. Flat, brambly, slight chlorine taste on the back of the tongue, with a dry not-quite-licorice finish.

Ruby. Chocolate, spicy nose. Very well balanced wine with lush tannins, subtle oak and fantastic finish. I love Phelps' wine. Drank for my birthday. May have been aged a bit too long. Not much tannins left.
