Joseph Phelps Insignia(2001)

With complex aromas of black cherry, plum, chocolate, currant and toasty oak, the wine displays layers of flavor and richness that disguise its power and longevity. Beautifully crafted and balanced, Insignia reflects a new level of quality from both the vineyards and the growing regions.

($140; bottled two weeks before my visit) Saturated bright ruby. Wild aromas of black cherry, black raspberry, currant, game, espresso and licorice, with a liqueur-like sweetness. Then fat, broad and sweet, with impressively deep flavors of black raspberry, minerals and dark chocolate. Lush and large-scaled, but impressively well-balanced. The tannins are buried by fruit and mineral flavors on the very long finish.

Cassis and coffee aromas. Soft textured and fresh. Flavours of coffee, cedar, chocolate and cassis. Very long length. Drink up to 2015.

It was around 85 degrees outside where we were tasting it at the winery. We had already tasted more than 20 wines at that morning and this one still stood out. I would guess (the conditions were not at all ok to get a grip on scoring) definitely over 90 points. [NR]

This was a special occasion wine for us - my husband's 40th birthday. It was worth it. For as long as I've been drinking and love wine, I still struggle with identifying the popular descriptive words you often read in wine reviews. I can't taste lemongrass and truffles in wine! But with this one, I clearly remember thinking, "Ah! leather and tobacco. I get it!"

With complex aromas of black cherry, plum, chocolate, currant and toasty oak, the wine displays layers of flavor and richness that disguise its power and longevity. Beautifully crafted and balanced, Insignia reflects a new level of quality from both the vineyards and the growing regions. A triumph. Aged nearly two years in all-new French oak, this massive wine stuns with its superb balance. Manages the elusive challenge of reining in hugely ripe black currant, cherry and oak flavors and sweet tannins while keeping the palate impression soft and alluring, almost feminine.
