Joseph Phelps Eisrebe 2013

External Review:

In 1994, the desire to produce an ice wine, or Eiswein, as it is called in Germany, prompted Joseph Phelps Vineyards to adopt a unique program whereby Scheurebe grapes would be picked late in the season and then frozen, thus concentrating their high sugar levels. The resulting wine was called Eisr be, a play on the German words Eis (ice) and Rebe (vine).

This wine was a deep amber color when poured. Rich and full-bodied with an almost syrupy texture, the wine showed citrus fruit, stone fruit, and honey character with nice floral notes present on the nose as well. This wine aged magnificently and was a delight after dinner.
