Editorial Reviews for Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Backus Vineyard
With a huge nose of red fruits, sweet pumpkin pie spices, vanilla, and cream this explodes from the glass. There are slow to emerge note of rust and crushed vitamin that add a some depth and help cut the sweetness on the nose. On the palate this remains packed with fresh fruit but with obvious wood spice and somewhat aggressive wood tannins. The mid-palate is filled with vanilla tinged red currant fruit that is rejoined by the wood spice on the long finish. A classic California Cabernet. 93pts
This is performing on another level with a fabulous nose that offers up very ripe fruit that retains a cool sense of freshness, lovely integrated oaken spice, blackberry pie filling, a toastiness that recalls pie crust and some sweet, stewed vegetal notes in a very positive sense. Some sweet herb notes and a slight hint of spicy porcini emerge. This is big, dense and chewy yet elegant and lithe in the mouth with great acidity. there really is a surprising sense of elegance and a good level of complexity across the palate as the fruit is edged with bloody mineral tones and a gentle, medicinal bitter note that extends through the finish. This remains very youthfully taut and will benefit from additional time in the cellar. 2008-2020
Bright red fruit, raspberry spiced nose with the same flavors synchronizing in the mouth with the addition of tar, leather, and oak.
aromas complete with black berries, black plums, black currants with little touches of cedar and wood. Sweet cinnamon spices on the palate combined with dark fruit and rich chocolate
Nose of marinated steaks and dark red fruits. Bright ripe core of fruity cherries. Amazing stuff.
Intensely rich and fruity on the nose. Powerful rich body, with cherry and black current flavors. Very nice mineral finish with just the right amount of eucalyptus/bell pepper hints in the background.
Gregory-Dal Piazhas put this perfectly...who could say more.....I agree completley. To me this is a very special wine that only urges the pallate to be enoyed with a great steak....enjoy!

...It exhibits a dark ruby/purple color, as well as an attractive black cherry, cassis, and dried herb-scented nose with spicy oak. Rich, full-bodied, and concentrated, it offers plenty of cassis fruit and a chewy style... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. A Cabernet Sauvignon wine from California in USA. 1995 Phelps, Joseph Napa Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml
The 1995 Cabernet is a powerful, extracted wine, with a rich oak component underlying the spicy, peppery flavors. As the wine continues to evolve it reveals cherry and plum-like aromas, rich, mature tannins, and the potential for excellent ageing in the cellar.
The 1995 Insignia may be slightly better than the 1994 - as hard as that is to believe. The final blend is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot. The 1995 exhibits a character similar to the 1994 - cassis, fruitcake, cedar, herbs, coffee, and black fruits intermixed with smoke - but the 1995 is slightly longer in the mouth. It is a wine of extraordinary extraction, full body, and marvelously pure fruit. Moreover, it has managed to soak up the 100% new oak aging, leaving only subtle pain grille notes. The tannin may be slightly more noticeable in the 1994, but my instincts suggest the 1995 is even richer and longer than the 1994 - as amazing as that sounds. This prodigious Insignia should be at its best over the next 20-25 years.
Deep ruby-red. Exhilarating, vibrant aromas of cassis, minerals, cocoa powder and brown spices. Juicy, very intensely flavored and sharply delineated; offers lovely restrained sweetness and great finesse. Complex and light on its feet. Finishes brigh... Stephen Tanzer's IWC.
