Joseph Drouhin Vosne-Romanée les Petits Monts Premiere Cru 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

"The 2008 Petits Monts is exceptional. The bouquet is deep, reserved and nicely cool in its aromatic profile of cassis, dark berries, espresso, woodsmoke, complex minerality and a topnote of Vosne spice. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and tightly-knit, with a very tangy core of sweet black fruit, fine-grained tannins, bright acids and excellent length and grip on the very transparent finish. The Drouhins always use a fairly high percentage of stems during fermentation, and the Petits Monts still shows a touch of its youthful stemminess at this point in its evolution. Tuck it away for six or seven years and stand back when opening, as there will a fireworks display going off in the glass!...93" JG 04/10

Rich bubblegum fruit, sweet cinnamon and plum. Some nice cherry cola fruit on the palate but overall seemed lacking in acid balance and a bit flabby.

This may be the most complex of all the wines we tasted this evening as you expect from a Grand Cru. Scents of violet, lavender, lemon, mineral, cinnamon and ginger all made appearances at various times as I kept returning to the glass to find something new. Citrus, spice and mineral played on my tongue along with an intense acidity that needs time to mellow, yet the wine itself seemed very light on the palate. It will very definitely reward those patient enough to let it reach full maturity.

88 Points - Burghound A classic Vosne nose of spicy violet suffused red and blue pinot fruit where the spiciness carries over to the supple middle weight sour cherry-infused flavors that possess a fir

In his Burgundy book, Robert Parker wrote of the Domaine Jean Grivot, "The wines produced by...Jean Grivot and his son Etienne range from very good to exhilarating. Since 1980, his wines have consistently been among the best made in Burgundy." And this small, 25-acre estate, spread across 15 appellations continues to impress. This 2008 Vosne Romanee shows dense cherry, earth and mineral notes on a firm structure, ideal for longevity. Very Limited!

Mild reduction doesn't completely hide the ripe blue and black fruit nose that is liberally laced with spice elements that continue onto the cool, textured and mineral-suffused medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent detail on the intense and long finish where the tannins do not appear to be quite as ripe as those of the Br l es though this impression could be due to the ample gas.

The grapes for this Monterey County Pinot Noir were sourced primarily from select vineyards in the foothills to the west of the Salinas Valley of Monterey County, including the cool and windy northern Arroyo Seco area and the Santa Lucia Highlands. The long growing season in Monterey allows the grapes to develop very mature, ripe fruit flavors with refreshing acidity and perfect balance. The wine features rich aromas of tart black cherries with hints of both clove and nutmeg. Ripe flavors of raspberries and cola follow on the palate. A small amount of Petite Sirah adds richness, giving the wine additional weight. This is a full-bodied wine with balanced acidity and a supple mouthfeel.

A more complex and more refined nose that is perhaps not quite as ripe features spicy, fresh and elegant red and blue pinot fruit aromas that possess a distinct floral component and the greater refinement also can be found on the rich and full-bodied flavors that evidence a sleek muscularity that culminates in a powerful, intense and dramatically long finish that somewhat surprisingly, is even more austere. This should be marvelous if given enough cellar time.
