- Wonderfully complex, intense and sappy with fairly supple flavors yet robust, dusty tannins, good richness and grand cru length. The really distinguishing characteristic though is the superb intensity as this offers flavor authority in spades yet comes across as somewhat understated in style. This should drink well for a long time.

- I met with Philippe Drouhin, his sister Véronique plus long time resident enologist Laurence Jobard, all of whom confirmed that 2000 was a challenging vintage especially because yields were very difficult to control. Not surprisingly, there was unanimity about the superiority of the Côte de Nuits versus the Côte de Beaune. Within the Côte de Nuits, Gevrey was perhaps the best performing commune and within the Côte de Beaune, the north fared better than the south. Sugars were good despite the higher yields, coming in around 11.5 to 12% potential alcohol with correct acidities and no touch read more...ups were deemed necessary. Philippe believes the 2000 vintage is a good to sometimes very good vintage but one they will mature well before the '99 vintage. The 2000's were racked just before the harvest and I tasted them in late October. At that time, the Drouhin team thought they would begin the mise in December and would probably proceed without fining or filtration; note that a few 2000s had already been bottled, including the Clos des Mouches. The Petits Monts was bottled in December and I had the opportunity to taste it from bottle in February. The Drouhin '99s were all as good, or in some cases slightly better, than initially previewed last year. There are a number of wines well worth searching for as there are many standout performers and from the perspective of an overall portfolio, this is as good a vintage chez Drouhin as I can ever recall. Wonderfully complex, intense and sappy with fairly supple flavors yet robust, dusty tannins, good richness and grand cru length. The really distinguishing characteristic though is the superb intensity as this offers flavor authority in spades yet comes across as somewhat understated in style. This should drink well for a long time. (hide)
